Swingarm Extensions?
08/30/19 at 11:46:30

Hello all,

I had stumbled across a post a while ago that mentioned some weld-on swingarm extensions that someone (maybe Ryca) sold at a time. I'm looking into building an extended swingarm and want to try making something like what I saw posted to try out different lengths (I'm thinking 3" may be about right). Does anyone know about these weld on bits or have any input?

I believe Ryca discontinued them for some reason. I've installed two sets thus far. A bobbed Savage looks really stupid and out of proportion without 'em.

Thanks. I researched and bought the battery used in Yamaha Raptor 660/700's. Been my opinion that the OEM S40 battery is well oversized, it's physically the size of the battery in my 1700 Nomad. Once the motor is properly jetted it fires up after one rotation, instead of the 3-5 rotations in stock form, so this battery never gets all that taxed. I managed to fit the starter solenoid in that box with it. The stock starter wire and ground wire are re-used in stock length and both reach perfectly.

When you extended the swingarm, what effect did it have on the rear shocks?  Were the stock springs stiff enough?  I assume you gained some rear wheel travel.  Do you know how much additional travel you picked up.

I agree, cool battery box.

With me (200lbs) and my nephew (180lbs) both aboard, I jumped up and down on the rear seat to see if I could get the tire to contact the fender and I could not. That was with the preload at the max setting. I have since suggested to the owner to adjust two clicks softer. Larger arc of travel suggests an increase in said travel but, no, I did not do the math to that end. The biggest issue to overcome was extending the rear brake stay, and then trimming the original stay since it comes 1/8" within the tire sidewall. Overall the chassis exhibits better road manners and the rear suspension is a bit more compliant with the extra leverage.

The above bike is by no means a bobber, it's just a very mild custom for a good friend of mine. I'm working on one for my son with a solo springer seat, a flat rear fender and a sissy bar. I was inspired seeing the extensions on the Ryca CS-1 and the proportions of the Ryca bobber. The S40 needs to be stretched, IMO, when bobbed but I hate hardtails. All my bobber builds have front/rear brakes, working suspension, turn signals, etc...so they can be ridden daily.

Thanks BrokeAss, this was the bike I saw and figured this would be a good place to start In building my own swingarm. My main complaint about all the custom S40s I see is that the back end looks so small and bunched up compared to a lot of other bikes out there and I believe that beyond aesthetics the performance is affected as well. Good to know the stock shocks will work for the time being with an extended swingarm.

about how long are those extensions?

Those are the 3" extensions Ryca sold. The first set were $100, and they're on my son's bobber project. This set here was only $50 because I get the impression Ryca is slowly closing down, now they're not available at all.
