LS650 & DR650 - engine similarities/differences? (Read 124 times)

But do the engines have any thing (parts?) in common? If so, how much? Or are the engines completely different and share no common parts?

The pre-96 DR valves and springs are the same. The pre-96 cam will fit but has more lift and duration. The DR piston can be used for the bigger bore higher compression builds. And that is about it for parts interchangeability.

Putting the stock DR piston in the Savage won't do much....putting the Wiseco version in will - but it is not as easy to install as a cam.

I don't know of anybody that has done a direct comparison of a Wiseco piston with a stock cam vs. a stock piston with a performance cam.....so folks would just be guessing as to what is the better option. It usually comes down to doing the cam while you are replacing a damaged one or replacing the leaky head plug. Piston changes require a lot more work.

The thought of adding a DR CAM would really change the Fun Factor from "O-Yea " --- to --- "Yee Haa " Do ya'll recon it would make the MPG get better ? I'm only getting in the low 50's now .

A stock piston and the original Stage 1 cam made a nice performance ance increase. I later added the Wiseco piston and started testing various carbs which added more performance.
I have 94mm Wiseco pistons and Stage 3 cams in stock now.

The stock 90-95 DR cam has basically the same duration as the Stage 3 but a bit more lift as I remember.

It is a very similar engine size/design to our Savage/S40, but man it has so much more power and so much more torque right from the start. It felt legit fast.
