New S40 owner.  Few questions
07/31/19 at 14:09:45

Picked up an '05 S40 with good bones.  Runs/drives, but has a few things I'm going to be sorting out.   My other ride is a '72 Honda CB450, I've done quite a bit to it in terms of making it reliable, so tinkering and troubleshooting isn't an issue for me.  First off, I sourced an air filter from Ryca since the previous owner had TAPED a Uni filter to the carb, went with the "pancake" style since the stock airbox is AWOL.  No speedo.  No front brake on the bike.   The sight glass is cracked on the reservoir.  I have the caliper/line/pads, just need to replace the reservoir and reinstall.  No tail light, bought a replacement with license bracket from Amazon.  Will be wiring that in shortly.  Solo seat in metal with no springs, I aim to put a proper solo seat with padding on.   The biggest issue is that they painted EVERYTHING flat black.   Forks, rotor, jug, case, wiring......   EVERY. THING.  *sigh*  The upside is that it was $800 for the bike with title and it came with a '87 Savage frame minus tank/engine with a title as well(possible street tracker build later).  Question I have at the moment is what grips will work with the stock throttle housing.  There are currently some black, spike end Amazon specials on there and they look like garbage.  I tried a set from Amazon that were a little more my style.  Regular black with rubber inserts, but they didn't fit into the housing with the starter/kill switch/hazards.  Other advice is also greatly accepted as I'm new to the platform.

ETA:  The wiring is definitely getting sorted through and dressed up.  Forgot to mention that and the exhaust welds are a joke.  Plus a missing bottom bolt at the jug.

I have a lot of stock takeoffs from RYCA.
I can fit you up with a speedo.

For the throttle tube, look for the kind that have 2 cable end holes for push/pull setups.  I think that's the kind I had gotten before.

Don't bother using that old brake line, get a steel braided line.

Most jap bikes have 7/8 handlebars , The savage has 1" as do HD bikes ,the throttle grip is always larger on either size  set, to slide over the throttle tube .

If you're  going on the cheap,.. you can usually find a freeze plug to stop up a sight glass hole.
(actual sight glasses are made of unobtainium)...

I’ll PM you about the speedo. Where’s the best place to source a line?

I had mic’d these before I ordered the previous set and they are 1” but the issue was that the grip diameter that clamped into the throttle housing was larger diameter than the goofy spike grips on there. Didn’t know if I was looking for something proprietary or what.

Maybe where confused here .you said the new grip doesn't fit INTO the right controls . that's true . the grip fits OVER a plastic tube that fits inside the control housing . you generally have to cut the old grip off and  mount the new grip on the old throttle tube.

Wow if it wasn't for the titles I'd say it was stolen because that is what people do when they steal bikes. That's what they did to both of mine. Anyway good luck. Use a razor or copper scrubby on those forks right away and save yourself the trouble of obliterating those seals.

I wouldn't use a razor blade it's steel ,a US penny before 1980 is 95 % copper ,softer than chrome and wont harm the fork tubes.(but may take forever  Sad   ).

depends on what you want to do.
I would consider using a rasor blade to slice off the corrosion.
The advantage of the penny or a wad of aluminum foil is they will fill in the pits.
