For two years I've wondered....
07/15/19 at 13:47:25

Love.my 87 Savage. The way it rides, a comfortable feel, easy to work on (not that I haven't gotten in over my head, because I definitely have). I've survived timing chain problems, tensioner modification, petcock issues... used your site to get through all of them. But what I want to know more than anything,  is how can I make my bike NOT SOUND LIKE A 4-WHEELER?!  Suggestions greatly appreciated.

The only thing I can think of is: make it more quiet. It's a single cylinder 4-stroke engine. It should sound the way it does in my book and that is a big part of the reason why I chose to get one. I think it would be a shame to muffle the sound but if you don't like the characteristic sound the only thing I can think of is to "kill the sound" altogether.

Use a Dyna muffler and it sounds like half a Harley.

Yup, makes it go pot pot pot pot pot. A larger circumference muffler will give it a deeper sound but its a single so its will always sound kinda like a lawnmower. I'm curious what a quieter sportbike muffler would sound like. They can have a softer whurrr type sound.

Sport bike muffler ?

Like a soft spoken sewing machine.

So Savage Chick, what kind and what level of sound do you want ?

Quiet ?
Loud ?
Mellow ?
Mellow full sound ?
A racing muffler with a decent baffle that does not restrict flow ?
Do you just cruise or do you get a bit aggressive on mountains, curves, and similar inviting roads ?

However, if instead of a muffler issue it is the sound pattern of the single cylinder engine then that’s just the way it is, a glorious thumper !

A hardly used take off is recommended.
But check out what the others in your area have done for aftermarket muffs.
It would be a real pain if you have to have it inspected and they force you to put the stock muff back on.

Next is how much can you spend?
It can be as simple as drill a few holes to buying a ready made slip on.

That being said, I bought a Cone engineering quieter reverse cone muff and I like it so far.  It seems a little quieter than the dyna.  I'm still ironing out some other issues but I'll be checking performance shortly.

I have used supertrapp for last couple of years and while I love the sound, you're are just not able to tip toe thru the neighborhood at 6am.

You must be young to relate the sound of a single to a 4 wheeler.....and not to a 500cc race bike.

Embrace the sound.....it is legendary!

Jeeeez!  Them thumpers are fast.  Those riders must be plum tuckered out after an afternoon of that stuff.

I assume the middle video is Isle of Man.  The speeds look through the roof.  That must be fun (if you've got the cajones, which I don't).

Thanks for the vids.

One thing is obvious from the videos, wonderful by the way, we've come a long way with tyres. Smiley

Which Cone muffler did you get?  Length? QuietCore or regular?

It's been awhile, but I think it's the quiet core 18" the hanger bracket was extra and although he says you can goop it up with rtv and slip it on, I made an adapter and welded it on.

I bought the short cone from Ryca with the adjustable baffle and it was pretty muffled. Louder than stock though.

A mellow full sound... I think.
I just cruise. I haven't been riding long enough to get aggressive. I try to know my limits. lol. I do like to ride a lot. I'd rather jump on my bike than in my car any day.
Sounds like I'm just going to have to embrace the sound from what I'm reading.
