 Look up the Reagan Administration's illegal immigrant records.  248% increase.  Contrary to what we want to believe, data says otherwise.  The tighter the constraints the more illegal immigration.  

 To be fair times have changed and cartel activity makes up a lot of the incentive to leave and not come back.  In either case, numbers say more restriction means more illegal activity within the border when examining the Southern border.

 Four separate examinations of immigrant activity from the mid-80's to most recent verifiable source data show that illegal residency goes up when border restrictions go up.  I'd reference them but what's the point.

 Once someone gets in, they typically don't risk leaving like they used to.  When the Southern border allowed easier transfer out of the country there was more people going in AND out.  It doesn't make sense initially, but the data proves otherwise.

 Heck, many even pay taxes when they are here, just so they can send money home legally.

 I do agree that more detention will result in fewer illegal immigrants within the country but we aren't even close to appropriating the amount of funds needed to do that.
