Petroleum Jelly for Wheel Bearings?
06/30/19 at 09:28:01

I read somewhere that sealed wheel bearings have crappy grease in them and it causes premature failure.
The remedy is to remove the seals, wash out the grease and pack them with petroleum Jelly and put the seals back on.

Is this true or is it hocus pocus and snake oil?

That's what I was thinking. I couldn't imagine Vaseline being good for anything but poker friction.
This advice came from a source that claimed to be a professional racer. Maybe he's trying to eliminate his competition through misinformation.

Maybe the guy has another use for his bearings? An X rated use?

Anyways, is it actually necessary to replace the so called crappy grease with something better? An actual grease product for high speed performance?

If you are talking about the sealed bearing that you are ordering from 123 Bearings.....leave them alone - the folks that make the bearings know what grease to use.

If you have some older bearings that are not sealed and you want to grease them up again.....wash out the old grease and use a name brand grease made for motorcycle wheel bearings.

I actually need to get new bearings for the 83 GS550 LD cast rims I've obtained. I'm prepping them for powdering now.

I'm going to put the new bearings in the cast wheels after they come back from powder coating.
