We've always had a blended structure in this country.  Socialism is merely one part of it.  Sadly, it's become too small a part when you have corporations controlling our political system with unlimited money.

There's a reason that the middle class has less and the top 1% hold so much of the wealth in the country (and it ain't socialism).

It's the cold truth too. Or maybe the cold wet truth.  

An valid point of Sowells is the moving target dynamics of so called income brackets. The year before last I was working and pulling in over $100k/yr. Then last year I was unemployed the entire year. This year I'm back to work earning whatever I currently earn. If you look at the household income during this period you see that my spouse and I had a very large combined income. Enough to put us in a high income bracket. But then when I was out of work even though I was impoverished my spouse's income kept the household income from dropping to poverty level. But during that year she went into heavy dept trying to keep the ship afloat without my income. This year we have both been paying so much of that back debt we're both living at near poverty levels even though our household income is much higher.
So which income bracket are we in now? Which were we in before? If my sister decides to move in with us later in the year which bracket then?

Now what if I suddenly inherited 200 million bucks (I wish). Then which bracket? And then after two years and I've spent all the inheritance on hookers and coke then what bracket am I considering I'd be unemployable due to the drug habit?

Who's middle class today? Who's still middle class next year? Same for the 1% which has the highest rate of transients than all lower income brackets. More people become 1% and drop out again at a rate 10 times higher than people transition between lower income levels and spend much less time in that level as well.

This is very important. Especially if you want to point fingers at some groups of people defined by abstract statistical analysis on static models which more often than not fail to differentiate between household and individual income. Fail to account for debts and windfalls and never seem to track the same sets of individuals over a span of several years.

Sowells book explains all of these factors in vigorous detail. Points out how fallacious most income statistics are and goes to great lengths to explain why. And how these statistics are misused sometimes for political ends by both parties.

As for the wealthy oneers. Who do you think invents all of today's popular leftist moral crusade rhetoric? The ivory tower academic intelligencia from their gated community estates with horse stables and private golf courses. Why have they pulled the wool over your eyes so badly? Because they are playing the same game wealthy plantation owners in pioneering America did to prevent the African slaves and white indentured servants from joining together against them. Keep them fighting each other. Which is the same game backs in the middle ages the lords and landowners played against the serfs and peons. And that's the same game that the Romans used to keep their occupied territories under their heels.

This crap today is another chapter of a book that stretches back to the dawn of written language. It's freaking groundhog day forever. The true legacy of the human race.
