2002 motor in 1995 bike
06/26/19 at 11:51:45

Hey Guys, thanks for the add.

I picked up a 1995 savage with a trashed motor and have been looking for a motor.  During the time between registering for the site and being approved, I came across a great deal on a 2002 motor.  I have done lots of research and asked anyone with a pulse, but I seem to be getting conflicting info.  Can anyone tell me if this motor will plug and play?  I just received the motor and I'll be bolting it in tonight, which I know wont be a problem.  I have heard some say that I will need to swap the rotor from my old motor, but that seems more relevant when putting a new motor in a pre 1994 bike.  Any advise would be appreciated.

THanks,

Should be no problem. Mine is a 2000 engine in a 1986 frame. Went in easy.

The problem is we can't be sure of those transition year bikes.
The 2002 TCI had 8 pins.  Before that it was 6.
If the 2 bikes have the same number of pins, then no problem, the TCI are the same.

If your 95 has 6 pins then you'll need to swap the rotor.

There is a difference in the ignition systems that happened around that time period. I don't recall which year is the changeover point, but the worst case scenario is that you will have to swap your 1995 rotor into the 2002 engine.

So basically if it plugs in, it works?  Thanks.   The wiring diagram shows that all years prior to 95 are the same, and all years post 95 are the same.  95 seems to be a one off.

You can always try it, then if you're having a problem accelerating, you'll have to swap the rotor.
