This tire appears to have a lot of life left but should I replace it anyway or can I get away with replacing only the tube.

As I was looking for tubes I found this one. My tire is stock size 140/80 but this tube has a bend which allows my bicycle pump(the only pump I have) to fit. Depends on the size of the nail hole.

It is not recommended to use a tube that is "too big", as there is too much tube to allow room in the smaller tire - and the tube can wrinkle inside the tire and that can allow the tube to fail. The tube you linked to says it will fit 140/90, 150/80 & 15/90 - but not the smaller 140/80 tire.

If the tube is in good shape and not more than 6-8 years old and the hole is a simple puncture.....I would patch it and put in a new one when you wear this tire out.

To answer the question you asked, no, you do not need to replace the TIRE and you can replace only the tube (or possibly repair it).

The PV-78 valve stem is very desirable for making it easier to check and air the tire.
I have never found a tube that has that stem AND shows a fitment of a 140/80-15 tire.

I see you are using a Metzler 140/80-15 tire (or it sure looks like one). So do I.
I have used 140/90-15 tubes for years without any issue.

Dave says it is not recommended.. I'll accept the risk for the convenience of that 90 degree stem.

P.S. I suggest you smooth out the inside of the tire where the nail came through. There could be sharp edges to the hole (there was on mine when that happened.). I used some coarse sand paper to smooth it out.

Reply #9 - 06/18/19 at 12:50:47 Other than a new tube ,you could place a tire patch on the nail hole Inside the tire. the nail hole appears to be in the tire groove which doesn't contact the road ,that would make the tire safer to run in my mind.

If you semi inflate the tube (just enough to make it slightly round ) it tends to move the tube back away from the rim to the widest section of the tire , place the nut on the stem just far enough to stop it from moving inside and you have less chance of a putting another hole in the tube when mounting the final bead to the rim.
