2007 ls 650 only runs with choke out
05/30/19 at 13:37:30
I have a 2007 Suzuki s40 LS650 Boulevard (same as a Savage). It only has about 1500 miles on it and I have the whole engine checked out a few hundred miles ago. If I put the choke back in the bike will idle too slow and die ... when I drive it with the choke out it will backfire when I turn it off.
Should I try to replace the petcock?
Thanks!

If the bike idles too slow with the choke out, maybe just adjust the idle ?

Carb is gummed up but you should install a Raptor petcock anyway cause it will fail too and maybe leave you pushin instead of riding.

Idle speed is adjustable with the idle speed screw. (little knurled screw just below the choke knob)... turn clockwise to speed it up.
Too slow idle will starve the top end of oil, so try to keep an idle speed that purrs instead of putts... 1,000rpm to 1,100rpm.
(sounds like a kitten purring instead of a bouncing basketball...)...

I addition, you should be aware that there are two positions on the choke. Pull it all the way out to start. Once it's running, lightly push it halfway in while it warms up. I'm able to begin riding my bike while in the half choke position.

Yes, but it stops running once I push it all the way in after it should be warmed up.

Did you just get this bike? Was it running properly when you got it?
Sound like a fuel starvation issue. Adjust the idle and replace the petcock as suggested. Hopefully, that will solve the issue.

I would start by checking for plugged or restricted slow/pilot jet. Then i would remove the idle mixture screw cover and adjust for best/fastest idle after engine is fully warmed up.
And... If you are at sea level you will likely need a #55 slow/pilot jet and #150 main jet...
And... Need to raise the needle...
