New mounting position for the license plate
05/26/19 at 01:01:39
This winter I bought a -94 Suzuki Savage in good condition with a plan to modify in to a bobber or something similar. I will wait until next year to really get started on the rebuild but I wanted to get rid of some chrome and saddle bags for this season and since the previous owner had welded the mounting plate for the license plate to the right side of the bag holders I decided to try ad find a better place for it the didn't very much or any modifications to the bike and I came up with the left side passenger foot peg mount (if that is what it's called?).
I bought a cheap plate holder from Banggood and machined a small piece of aluminium to use as a long spacer and mount. The spacer is made from a 25mm OD aluminium rod with a milled slot to fit the mount on the swing arm.
The original bolt was a fine thread pitch M10 with 1.25mm per turn but I decided to use a regular 1.5 pitch M10 on my spacer and use new bolts instead.

After making the end of the rod flat I did the wide slot

Here is what it looks like before mounting it on the bike just after I finished with the threads

The is what the peg mount looks like. You can clearly see that notch that fits in the milled slot of the spacer. The original bolt to hold the peg was about 55mm long so I will try and get a 60 or perhaps even 70mm long bolt for my spacer since I drilled it fairly deep.

This is the plate holder I ordered. I will not use the small "tilt bracket" but instead bolt the holder directly to my aluminium spacer.

Nice looking but the Swedish plate is much larger and I'm not sure bending the plate is street legal here either.

That would probably work great
I am a bit reluctant to touch the bolt holding the back wheel though.
I drilled and tapped the M10 thread on the opposite side today and test mounted it to the bike. It worked very will. A friend will help be with a small piece of aluminium pipe to put between the two mounting points to help with stability.

Looks good, nice work!
FWIW, I wouldn't worry too much about plate mounts that use the axle, they're quite commonplace here in the States. They're typically only about 3/32" thick or so.

Thanks BrokeAss
Btw, where did you hide the battery on that build? It looks awesome and so clean.
