Ignition switch rating (Read 77 times)

California Gender:	Ignition switch rating 05/07/19 at 21:46:11 Does anybody know what the ig switch is rated for? I'm thinking of putting it before the fuses so both fuses would be switched off. This would switch the decom controller off when the bike is off.

I was looking at the wiring diagram last night, and only the decomp controller/solenoid/stater relay is on the unswitched circuit.
All else is on the switched circuit.
Both circuits have 20 amp fuses.
The decomp solenoid can be a big draw item but it's momentary.
For those that remove the solenoid and go manual, there's no reason not to put both circuits thru the switch.

A rule of thumb says the fuse should be rated for 2 the actual usage.
So, a stock bike will probably use 10 amps normally.

A stock light is 55/65 watts and some people have installed 2 lights without blowing up the switch although they have ran the battery down.

So a stock ig switch will handle 15 - 20 amps no problem, 30 - 40 amps is probably the limit. That's enough to run both circuits thru the switch.

Now that you brought up fuse sizes...my factory ones are likely too big since the conversion.

No more decompression controller and all of my lights are LED.

Maybe there is no need to downsize the fuse.....as the wire size has not changed - only the working current draw. I have 6 years and 10,000 miles and no electrical gremlins yet (provided you don't count my RYCA tail light getting soaked and damaged by a TN/NC rainstorm.

(You folks with RYCA style tail light should take them apart and seal the seams with RTV).

Someday I will be old......But not today!

The switch itself has pretty good sized wire, but the harness is minimal.
