This is promising.  My 20 minute mock up looks like this may be possible.  The rear of the tank is within an inch of the stock tank.  Have to make up a cheesey 80s name if I do it.   Smiley

Look, it's a savage tempter.   Cool

You can call it a sampter or a tempage.

I like the thinking there, but I have to save that name for the day I pickup a dead a GR650!

I could call my other bike a GT650 because Suzuki never made one and it has a GT185 tank.  But Suzuki made a GS650 (though not in the E trim) so I need to be creative with the name if I build it.

I'm thinking "Street Hawk" to commemorate just how horrible the 80s were.    Roll Eyes

Or I could build it how it looks in the "crap mock up" picture and call it Mad Max, but that would be just wrong.   Grin

My brother used that tank on his build and it was super comfortable afterwards I thought. At 6' tall its just perfect if just not a little tight.

Is that an Emgo muffler ?
You’ve got a real hot spot where the baffle is.

Lancer:

I suspect that "hot spot" is where his boot blocks the air flow while riding.  At 6' and with that long tank, his rear set pegs are lower and farther back than my pegs.

My muffler has a similar spot on the bottom where the air doesn't flow well....it has turned from blue to nearly black.

The hot spot on the muffler is not uncommon on exhausts.  Header length and some baffling can contribute to this.

Do you know what petcock your brother used?  The stock petcock is a vacuum operated unit, and the mounting bolts are ~44mm apart.  The raptor's holes are set at 34mm and I'd like a non-vacuum unit.

So...

This project has been on the sidelines while I was busy building a Sprinter van for traveling.  I figured I would get started on it here in the spring but it may have to wait a little bit longer.  So I decided I should at least get the S40 running again.

The bike has sat for almost two years.  I had run the carb dry, popped off the gas cap, stuffed a rag in the filler hole bung (to reduce condensation in the tank), and parked it.

The AMG battery wouldn't take a charge so I replaced it.  The bike would fire on a shot of starting fluid but wouldn't fire on gas.  Tank was clean with a half tank of fresh gas.

I removed the fuel line and tested the petcock on PRI and RES.  Nothing.  I had a raptor petcock that I had planned on installing in the GS450 tank (but it didn't fit) so I tossed that on there and it fired right up and ran perfect.

I'm pretty sure my carb was supposed to disintegrate after a few months of sitting.  Not sure what went wrong. haha Smiley

Kinda like it ! Whats the capacity of the tank ? Funny how I used to not be fond of that bodywork but now I can see the classic styling of that era. The Yamaha 400 twins had a similar look to them, I rebuilt one for my brother years n years ago. I think it’s worth pursuing it . It would be a fun build.

We sold our house last year and moved twice!  But, I still have these bikes taking up space in the garage.  Now that we are sort of settled into our new home I'm trying to muster up some motivation to get this project started.

The only problem is that I ordered another Sprinter van that will need to be built out in August.   Undecided
