Question on the rectifier/voltage regulator

I have always assumed that on motorcycles/ ATVs etc the voltage regulator has to be firmly grounded to the bike but I swear I recently saw one just laying in a leather bag a guy was using to hold his wire mess.

I am getting ready to ditch my rear fender and move the voltage regulator but if it does not in fact have to be bolted or grounded to the frame it opens up a lot more options. I am not sure where I am actually going to be putting the electrical stuff but I am leaning towards making a fake oil tank....

Any guidance or ridicule would be appreciated...I can take it!

But in most cases it is libel to get hot. Attaching it to the fender adds to the heat dissipation being under the seat it doesn't get a lot of air flow.
