Raptor vs Stock Petcock Question
04/23/19 at 11:21:24

Will installing a raptor petcock yield a power increase even if the stock petcock is functional, or does this only make sense to do if there are problems with the vacuum feed? I have a low-miles bike, and generally support "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

 No power increase.

The stock one will fail eventually, the Raptor is less likely.

You didn't say what year your bike is - time and fuel quality have an affect on how long the diaphragm in the stock petcock will last.....it will fail eventually, and the symptoms often have folks looking in the wrong place to fix the problems.  Sometimes they run erratically, sometimes you get fuel in the crankcase or air cleaner (or both), sometimes the bike runs too rich and sometimes too lean!

It causes stuff like this:

If you like gambling.....then keep the stock petcock and see how long your luck holds out (keep a phone number of a close friend who can come pick you up and give you a ride home).

Other than an extended cam chain tensioner ,the Raptor is the best money you'll ever spend to make your bike more reliable.

Eegore - Thanks, that makes sense. A coworker of mine had a savage and reported a power increase with the petcock change, but I'm guessing his stock one was already malfunctioning.

Dave - it's a 2013. I'll probably buy the petcock and do the change the next time I need to fiddle with the bike (or need something to fiddle with  Cheesy).

Has anyone had success with the knock-offs on ebay/amazon instead of the OEM Yamaha part?

Yes, you can find a knock off that's the right size.
But you have to trust the vendor to post a pic of the actual unit and your eyes to measure the outlet to the correct size.

The stock Yamaha Raptor is only about $30.00 , is what you think you'll save,  worth the risk?
