Because I can't zip up on account of I need more leather to wrap around my thighs. I have medium and large, and I swear they are labelled bakkerds..

I so wear the hard shin and knee guards on occasion. Not only do I feel safer with them but they also keep my lower legs warm and dry if the road is wet. I may get a pair of chaps some day. For now for the really cold days I have insulated and armored riding over pants.

Sure. They are synthetic material (poly or nylon) with cheapie hard plastic protection on knees and removable insulation (like on a jacket). In theory they would provide some abrasion protection. I bought them from Jafrum about 6 years ago and they were in the $40-$50 range.

I think they would provide better protection than jeans, but only marginally. They do provide warmth in cold weather though and can be made decently water resistant by spraying with water repellent. I trust my shin/knee guards to give more protection, but the coverage area is much more limited.
