New S40 owner (Not looking anymore)
03/25/19 at 16:06:51
After lurking on the forum for a wile and joining with a brief hello,
I searched and found several used S 40's for sale ranging from
2006 -2015 model years and decided on a 2012 with under 600 miles on it . The bike is clean and had sissy bar and rack even has a windshield. I have only taken a one hour ride so far but am enjoying it so far. Bike is completely stock. I will attempt to post a few pics.

IIRC you're supposed to change oil at 500 miles. Dunno if it's been done.

Not sure if oil has been changed or not .Oil level is right between the lines on sightglass and looks clean. I plan on changing it but need to pick up an oil filter or two. I'm thinking of using Amsoil that has worked well in my XT250 not sure how well it would be for the rockers snd cam of the S40.

Very nice bike! Welcome.
Seeing that you have another bike you are not new to the motorcycle world, but heed the advice of the folks here and don't try to get creative with oil options. Others have done the work for you. Rotella is what you will find is the most trusted and recommended. You will see some using synthetic T6 and some using dino T4 but stick to either of these and you're good.
If you have old Rotella laying around post what you have. There are some questions about the CJ/CK rating on some flavors and one has moly in it that is NOT recommended for our wet clutch. IIRC the one you want is CK-4 which is the good version without friction modifiers (moly). You'll see this on the back label.

Didnt rotella start using somethign (moly?) that makes wet clucthes slip in one version of the T6, so its not as easily just bought off the shelf without doing some research...

I know this is getting dangerously close to a oil war,
but I (a total newb) bought T4 just to not make that mistake.

Boberticus:
The slippery oil was an old version of the T6 synthetic.
Unless you come across some old bottle on a shelf somewhere.....you are not going to buy any of the old formula - it is long gone from the stores. If you see a white bottle of T6.....don't use it in the motorcycle.

Sounds like Rotella T6 is the way to go.I defantly need new tires and have seen some posts about replacement tires and sizes. I don't like the stock tires ,they ride hard and handle poorly. Also 7 years is past an age I want to trust. Are there any perticular tires that give a softer ride and ha dle well?

If you ride 2,000 miles or less a year...go with the Shinkos.
If you ride 10,000 miles a year.....go with the Michelin Commanders.
