Rear tire tube keeps chafing flat
03/11/19 at 20:14:23

I have had four flat rear tires due to the tube chafing until there's a slit in the tube within 20,000 miles. I ran stock size k555 Dunlop tire and now a Michelin C2 140/75. I bought the mag wheel that has been recommended on this to get away from a a tube but it looks like those tires are 130/90-16 which would raise the bike almost an inch. That isn't much, but my wife who is 4'10" also rides the bike and we need it as low as we can. I have had 3 different reputable shops install the tire/tube. I am just curious if anyone has any suggestions or insight on the cause? I would like to keep with a high mile tire if possible. Thanks!

are you using the recommended tire pressure for the tire?
Can be 90% of the max tire pressure.

Going to a 130/90-16 may not raise the bike a full inch.....most likely it will be closer to 1/2 inch taller than the recommended 130/90-15.

If your tube is getting a hole, there must be a rusty spot or some other roughness that is wearing the tube.

Clean the rim, sand any rough spots, and put a coat of paint on anything that isn't shiny chrome.....install a new rim band.  You can also get a heavy duty tube that has thicker rubber.

Yeah, I try and check that every couple weeks and keep it at 32 to 34.

I may try the mag wheel and if it is too tall cut the spring a little. The slits are usually on the middle of a football shape where the tube had folded over on itself. There have been up to three different spots on a single tube after a flat. Only one is bad enough to have the slit, but it has been chafing in a few spots.

If the tube is folding over on itself, then it is too big for the tire.

As other have said, check for a high spot on the rim and install a new rubber rim guard. Using Talcum power or Baby powder when installing the tube (lots of it) helps with rubbing issues too.

That may be the case. Usually I have just trusted the shop. I bought an extra last time (same size as one that chafed) and i remember the tube being in the range of the tire. I'll check that next time though. Thanks.

If you are installing a 16" tube in a 15" tire....it is going to be too big!

The tube on there now is 15". The tire on the mag wheel would be 16", but would not need a tube.

Do the folds go along the tube.....or across the tube?

That would indicate the OD is too big - too much rubber out there for some reason.

What size tire do you have?

Here is where you can figure out the tube size(s) that will work.

The current tire size is 140/75-16. I believe that i have 5.11/5.10-16. There doesn't seem to be an exact conversion, but it's close.

I thought you had a 15" tire on there now....not 16".

I didn't realize the chart didn't have any 15" tires/tubes on it.

I am so confused. Huh
