Help!!!!! - Electrics and Throttle problems
03/04/19 at 01:13:15
Bike Stats:
- 2016
- 6400kms
- 55 / 155 / 3 spacer
- Stock header
- Un-baffled British type trumpet muffler - with torque lollipop mod
- Battery relocation mod with lithium battery
- Raptor petcock
- Airbox delete
- Uniflow filter
Ok so went for a ride up into wine country about 150km NW of Sydney (0-500m ASL), bike had done about 150km of this type of riding the day before. The following day bike was doing about 100kmph / 60miph and heard a pop not unlike a backfire when I eased off the throttle too quickly, started losing power and engine seemed to be firing intermittently.
Could not restart bike, had no electrics?
Had to clutch start the bike (key was in and set to On) after wheeling up a hill. Bike started on releasing the clutch and had laboured firing "boom, boom, boom" with any application of throttle. I brought the bike to a stop and it seemed to idle fine however when rolling on the throttle it seemed to chock out engine and return to the laboured "boom boom boom". Electrics were working however Neutral light was very dim, headlight was very dim, and indicators flashed faster than usual.
Managed to limp bike in 1st 2km to the nearest pub at idle. If I applied the throttle too much the 'boom boom boom' labouring returned with the bike jumping forward with each detonation. Got the bike to the pub and started to troubleshoot. Left bike behind a shed and key at pub on a promise from the bartender that a mechanic would be out in the morning to check it out.
soooooo any help from the community would be great!
Spark plug fouled from being too rich?
Blocked jet?
Something to do with float / float bowl?
Cant seem to figure out why electrics would have gone?
Valves?
Things i could have done better if i had the right tools
- Checked the float bowl / stripped the carb
- checked the spark plug
- checked the fuses
I probably wont have access to the bike for the next few days so I want to give the outback mechanic some ideas based on the knowledge in this forum.

That is the classic symptoms of a low (dying) battery.
Either the battery is shorting out, or your charging system is not working.....or you have a loose or shorted wire somewhere.
I would start by testing the battery voltage.....and charging the battery.

I had a battery in a GSX1100 that had an internal failure (broken plate) that caused just the symptoms you described. The madding thing: it still showed 13+VDC - until any load was put on the battery - and then it would drop to 0VDC. One the load was removed...13+VDC.

Sometimes my brain does that.
The backfires are just awful.

If you don't find an electrical problem, I'd be looking for signs of over heating. Is your header pipe bluing after running at constant highway speeds ? It would seem to me that running an open exhaust, and 55/155 jets, and your elevation being at/ near sea level, that you should be using only two washers on the needle jet, otherwise you could be running lean in the mid rpm range, (60mph- where you run most of the time) and that could cause over heating .
If your running a 50 weight oil instead of 40w that's a mistake ,it will also cause the motor to run hotter.(It's been tested).

Check out YouTube videos for "how to test your regulator/rectifier" to see if your lithium battery is being charged properly.
I run a lithium battery with the stock rectifier and it works fine but there are issues with older rectifiers not providing consistent voltage.
