how much ZDDP additive to use?
02/13/19 at 05:29:07
Getting ready to do my first oil change, got it all drained out, was waiting on the oil that came yesterday evening, finally. I went with Shell Rotella T6 synthetic, and got some Redline break in additive to bring up the ZDDP levels. How much Redline should I add, and should I add it to the full oil amount, or replace part of the oil with the additive?

Be careful, to much ZDDP can be as harmful as to little , and the oil you're using already contains enough for normal running. Adding extra is usually only needed if breaking in a new piston and ring set/cam, and that should be with normal (dino) oil for the first 1,500 miles. but if you want to boost the level I believe you only need to use 1/2 ounce added to your oil change . I've never used it myself but maybe others that have will chime in here if I'm mistaken.

Now that we have confirmed the T6 has 1,200 ppm of zddp....there really is no need to add any ZDDP.
If you want to.....just add 1/2 oz. per oil change (1 oz. per gallon). That will bring you up to around 1,400 ppm - which is considered the safe maximum.

Looks like I've got enough Redline for a LOT of oil changes then!

Yes, and unfortunately there is a whitish sludge that starts to settle out in the bottle as it ages. Dunno' what it is.....if I put the bottle in my ultrasonic cleaner with the heater on and get it hot, I can shake the bottle and get it back into solution....it is a pain in the but and I have stopped using it.
