ok, My bike was stored for winter .. the other day it was nice... I went over and had it started .. pushed the choke in and it died .
 now it wont start , it tries to a bit.. i installed the yamaha petcock on it..and has been on there over a year now... no problems... i added feul stabilizer to the gas before I stored it.. but ...I have no idea what could be wrong...  any help appreciated.. Thanks Pam

I'd have the battery load tested or at least charge it. If the battery is down it can still crank the motor over ,but the voltage can drop if it goes below 10 volts there won't be any spark at the plug.

I would drain the gas, pull the carb and clean it REALLY well, slap it back on, pour in some fresh gas, fire it up and see how she does.

Charge the battery and then try again. Don't push the choke in until the bike is properly warmed up.  

Once you have it started, keep the choke out for a few seconds.  Then push it half way in and go for a ride to finish warming it up.  Once you ride for a few minutes you should be able to push the choke all the way in and hold an idle.

NEVER start pulling carbs right away.  Bad idea.  Honestly, people on here want to pull carbs way too often and way too fast.  Get it running and keep it running for a bit, even if you need to use the throttle to keep it going.  If it doesn't clear up, then you may need to go further.

have been charging the battery and I called the shop..he said probaly the carb and I don't know enough to take it apart... only has less than 900 miles on the bike

The bike sat all winter.  It just needs to get the "cobwebs" out of it.  You'll need a strong battery to get it fired up, but it will be fine.  

Do not take it to that shop. Carbs don't get gummed up sitting for just a few months.  Especially if you used stabilizer and ran the fuel low.  But...

The battery would be low over the winter, you didn't run the engine long enough to top it off, and you ran it down further trying to start it again.

So i'm with batman and I'll say "it's probably the battery."

The same carburetor and fuel were allowing it to run.
You shut off the choke and it died.
You used the last of your battery to start it.
You should have ridden off with the choke on and waited until you were five minutes down the road, rolling at speed, and Tried shutting off the choke.
That way you could have felt it falter and pull it back out.

Charge the battery.
Try to start it.
If it's not TRYING to start right away
Before you run it down again

Let it charge.
What we Don't know is
How Old is the battery?
What kinda battery is it?
Low on water?
I seriously doubt your problem is anything other than the battery.
Your carburetor and fuel have been tested.
And it RAN.

Only You know How it RAN.
Don't let it idle on the sidestand.

You and I are in complete agreement.
If I had a problem and Dave said he would come to help, I'd be 100% comfortable in believing that problem would be solved.
F.W.I.W., Dave is not the only board member who would give me that comfort.
There are others who have a level of capability that few people have.
I wish I could count myself among them.
