Gasket Installation
01/16/19 at 14:13:55

Howdy...ready to remount side covers, with new gaskets, and read in the Forum at some point that it is a good idea to cover both sides of new gaskets with black silicone gasket maker to insure a better seal.
New gaskets have the partial bead of sealant, but looking for advice on this...
Thanks in advance, savages..

The factory didn't use any sealer on the new gaskets......and I don't either.

When using old gaskets....maybe a better seal can be had with a very light skim coat of sealant - it really depends on how old, brittle and compressed the old gasket is.

So....my recommendation is don't use any sealer on a new gasket - however I do put a small amount on the backside of the rubber grommets where the electrical wires pass through the case.  The only place that gets sealer is the places where there are no gaskets (center seam on case halves and cylinder head cover).

Generally, people use way too much of that stuff.

You can screw up Huge with goo on gaskets.
Look carefully at the clutch cover.
You can use oil.
Or
Very
Judiciously
Apply
Some NON RTV gasket sealer.
Use what motorcycle mechanics use.
Use what the book calls for.
Not RTV

I do as dave does.  No RTV or sealer on new gaskets.  You can put a light smear of oil on the cover side to make it easier to come off when you need to open it.  never a leak.
