Well go check out new or used Suzuki SV650.  Mid mount controls, more power, more handling, more speed....rock solid reliability and a huge supply of aftermarket accessories.
(They aren't very pretty to look at in my opinion.....I am not a fan of naked sport bike styling).

But....you can find a lot of motorcycle for not too much money if you look around.

(Sorry....you will have to cut and paste as the link is too long).

Just wrap the link in url tag to get a usable link.
https://cincinnati.craigslist.org/mcy/d/cincinnati-suzuki-sv-650-clean-title/...

You can also use the tag like THIS if you want.

Anyone wanting to see just how I used the url tags above just use the quote button and you'll see the tags.

I check out the 06 Boulevard Sunday, and have read ALL the replies. There is just too much that I'd want to alter to buy THIS bike. I like its simplicity, sort of low weight, and low cost, but in the end, that cruiser seating/riding position killed it for me- funny, I know that is what SOLD the bike to the masses!

I don't blame you.  It's a bit of a project.

The reason I picked this bike is that there just aren't a lot of modern bikes that lend themselves to being modded into a retro standard and most newer standards are fugly!  Still, it's definitely not the easiest way to get such a bike.   I would have bought a W650 in a heartbeat if there had been any available when I started this project.  I also considered the Yamaha SR400 as a base for my project.

I'd be interested in what you end up deciding on.   Good luck with your search.

There's a bike out there for everyone. MMRanch's GS is a nice basic motorcycle. Even more basic are the SR400 and SR500. If you can locate an old GN400, that's about as basic as you can get for a 4-cycle single, right down to the kick starter.

Kawasaki's 500 has been around for decades and can be found real cheap. It's a water cooled twin and very comfortable.

The Honda Ascot comes to mind too.

If you want a new bike warranty, the new RE 650's look like GREAT standard bikes.

I owned 3 of the Ascot singles and two of the V twins I liked the looks and they were OK bikes too- that one is priced HIGH!  What I wish I'd kept was the GB500 Honda. Check em out on my site below:
