A silly exaust question
01/03/19 at 17:48:41

Would there be any benefits for a 1 into 2 header and running two mufflers?

The Harley 350 Sprint was set up like that. Just for a balanced look I guess.

To my knowledge there would be no performance benefits.

Honda has been using dual silencers on their top of the line motocross bikes for several years now.  They claim it makes the bikes handle better and who knows what else.  Honda makes great motorcycles, but if it made "that" much of a difference, everyone would be doing it.

The first models used a single header pipe and then "Y" split the rear mufflers using a smaller diameter pipe on the shorter pipe to promote even flow into both pipes.

The latest variations spilt at the header pipe and use 2 separate silencer assemblies.

In a word, no, I think (depends on the mufflers) you'd be adding weight to the bike ,and might be making it harder to tune. 2into 1 adds to performance ,1into 2 just adds complexity .
The Honda 450 above may have a cam with overlap and with unequal exhaust pipe length may have better power do to doubling it's chances of wave tuning( weaker but spread across more of the rpm range). T he savage cam has zero overlap and therefore zero chance of wave tuning, thus no performance gain with a stock cam.

If you are looking to unnecessarily add weight to the bike, that would be the way to go. I have a twin Yosh system on my DRZ. Looks great. Sounds awesome. Adds about 15 pounds over the single system. I did it purely for looks.

Not on a Savage for sure.

However on something like this:

250cc single. about 50 hp. 155mph or so top speed. Alex Rins finished third in the 2014 Moto3 championship on that bike.

The reason I asked is because I got very lucky this week, I found an 85 gs450f at my local junkyard. I got the wheels, (mags 16 in rear, 19 front). The rear has same axel, the brake hub is a direct fit so once I get the spacers right the tab a in slot b  works no probs. No mods on that side. The sprockets and chain are in good shape so the chain mod is almost free and gives me a good place to start figuring sprocket  tooth combos. The mufflers are cool and in good shape.( Hence ; a silly exaust question).  Also got the gas tank. brackets for the rear pegs and mufflers, also a perfect start on rear sets. I haven't tried the front wheel yet. Doing that tomorrow hopefully that goes as good as the rear. It looks awesome with the mag on the back. I got a bunch of stuff for $100 bucks and found almost all the parts I was looking for. I will keep posting as I figure out what works and what doesn't. Have a great weekend everyone.

I wouldn't think that mufflers made for a 450cc twin would work all that well on a 650cc single - even if you used both of them.

The Harley Dyna muffler works well - because they were made for a cylinder very nearly the same size as the Savage.

I wasn't seriously thinking of using both of them, I've been learning about how the exaust works and I got both mufflers,so that got me thinking about it. The guy on u tube   didn't cover that configuration. I didn't know our bikes do not have valve overlap. Now  I get it.  I got the baffles with them plus the back plates are adjustable , hopefully I can open them enough, they are Short and look cool.

Dadyo

I've experimented a little with making my own baffles.   If the exhaust can't free flow out the pipe the the pressurized gases in the muffler acts as a noise reducer in effect , so you can have loud free flow at low Putt-Putt speeds , and nicely baffled at interstate speeds out of the same pipe (its a balancing act) .
Try , them and let us know how it works ???

Dave , that 18" Reverse-Cone you got sounds "Really Good" .   Smiley

Dadyo
How did the pulley fit on the sprocket side ?   I started the Mag Wheel switch today but the LS 650 pulley hub don't fit the GS450 wheel.    So , I'm at an impasse .
