larger rear wheel

i just laced an 18'' yamaha xs650 rear rim using spokes made for the xs650 to my factory ls650 rear hub. just so everyone knows as long as the spokes are for the correct diameter rim for an xs650 it WILL fit. if you want a 16" rear wheel use the the xs spokes for 16 or if you want 17 or 18 and so on

That's what I used.  I called Buchanan's Spoke and the confirmed the Savage hub was almost identical to the XS hub.  The rim I got from Mike's XS wasn't drilled all that well and I had to open up the holes a little, but it's held up well for over two years now.

A 130/70-18 will fit in the factory swing arm - but that tire is too wide to fit on a 2.50x18 rim.....you need a 3.50x18 rim for that size of tire.

I believe a 120/80-18 is the most suitable size for the Savage when using a 2.50x18 rim.

I believe the vintage size of 4.00-18 that can be used on a 2.50-18 rim is too tall to use with a stock swing arm, and the same is true for most tires with that are a /90 profile.

Here is a link to the Cafe' tire thread......it discusses the tires sizes and widths for an 18" rim.

-------------

Yes, as long as you use a tire will a diameter less than 26".  I have used a 120/80-18 and a 4.10x18 Shinko 705 without issue.

I have stock shocks, so if you go with longer shocks, YRMV.

Here is my bike.  I put the rim on in the second post.
