ool in North Carolina. Between the middle of the 19th century and right up to today, 573 people, 99% teenagers, have died in school shootings in the United States. That averages out to precisely 3.6 deaths each year that can be attributed to gun violence in schools in America.

I think the difference is there is no organizations fighting to keep cellphones in the hands of teenagers, and there's no fear that the government is going to spend billions in resources to kick in each door to every house in the country and take the cellphones away.

There's a large anti-texting/driving program in CO that has strong outreach as it is part of a lot of education programs in public schools.  If there was an anti-shoot up the school program handing out flyers encouraging kids to use guns responsibly there would be considerable resistance.

I have no data or references, this post reflects my own observations when compiled and posted represents my opinion.

Actually, the 'no texting' programs are working towards the same goals as the NRA.  Responsible gun ownership, responsible cell phone usage while driving.  Cell phone companies are not suggesting teenagers don't use phones, they are working to encourage safe usage.

Also, don't get caught up in the trend of referring to the NRA as a single entity which is what you do when using the term organization. The NRA is people, like me, telling elected leaders what to lobby for. The NRA is not an small group of individuals acting on their own. That thinking is reserved for the narrow-minded ones on here and I wouldn't consider you in that group.

I wasn't referring specifically to the NRA in exclusivity as there are multiple organizations that fight any implementation of gun education that isn't their own.

My point was to indicate that nobody stops the local government groups from handing out flyers and having driving simulators regarding texting and driving.  But if the same government groups handed out firearm safe handling and conducted school shooting simulations there would by outcry, and some of it would be from people saying its another step towards martial law where they kick in our doors and take our guns.

You just don't see that level of extremist thought about cellphones.

Totally agree.

There's a large anti-texting/driving program in CO that has strong outreach as it is part of a lot of education programs in public schools.
Sounds good, is it helping any ?
Or could the money spent on that program, be spent in a different way, with more success ?

If there was an anti-shoot up the school program handing out flyers encouraging kids to use guns responsibly there would be considerable resistance.

I also agree with this, but for completely different reasons that I believe you were implying.
The,  considerable resistance, to, use guns responsibly,
Does NOT, come from the NRA/Members, Gun Owners, Gun Users, Gun Collectors, Police, Hunters, Competitors, etc.

The, considerable resistance, comes from the Gun Banners/Grabbers.
Observed Reality of, teaching Firearms Safety Training in MN, has made that abundantly Clear.
And it is reinforced by comments like:
“Oh you teach little kids how to KILL more efficiently”

Why is the very same logic not applied to Drivers Ed ?
Teach a 15/16 year old, how to drive, control, etc, a car, which they did not know how to operate properly, until they were ’taught’.  So with the extremely high Automobile death rate, one just, ’taught’ them to KILL with a car !

I think its because more people use cars than people who use guns.

If we started taking cars and big 4x4 trucks away because kids kill too many people with them then we would see the uproar.

I don't know.  We allocate space for the program at safety fairs but I do not follow their performance reviews.  If it were me I would spend the money creating tech that identifies active drivers and prohibits phone usage altogether.

Considering the flood of electronics in todays new cars.
(It’s almost to the point you can drive with your Eyes Closed)

The ability to stop a, ‘text’,  (unless it is voice hands free through the vehicle)
I think would be a rather simple fix.
To allow a passenger, to be able to text, and not the driver.
would be more complicated.

A few cases do occur where a parent/teacher/guardian/peer, says,
‘don’t text and drive’, and it actually works.
But that is becoming fewer and fewer simply because no one teaches, or reinforces teenagers, responsibility, like, ‘grounding/spanking/etc’.

Results of, punishment, resulting in learning responsibility, are rather less permanent, than, DEATH.
