Welcome, and as you being a first time rider I will agree with Justin_o_guy, take a rider safety or training course. Though it seems simple there is much to learn, and practice before you "hit the road is paramount". Riding safety is a serious matter and you can't just assume how you drive a car is applicable to how you operate a motorcycle.
I won't delve into minutiae of detail, but what I will tell you is, if you take a course you will realize how many people who ride have no clue what they are doing, and after you take a course when you drive you will see just how few people who ride understand what it is to do it safely.
Things like not wearing proper clothing and gear, riding in the blind spot of car mirrors, not approaching every intersection they ride through with evaluating escape routes and not leaving clearance to cars ahead of them at traffic lights.
Education for all new riders is key to your own safety. The thing that will surprise anyone who takes a course is how many folks who have bikes and ride already, fail the thing on their first attempt.
When I toke the basic course, there was a guy who had a Hayabusa, had taken the course previosly and failed for attendance, failed a second time because he just didn't pass, yet he is on the road riding a 130mph machine.
I would also agree with ride it, get to know it and go from there.
