Just purchased a 1988 Savage with 8200 miles.  So stoked to get a build going 😈

Looks like a pretty clean 88 Cbiscut.  Keep us posted on your build.

Before you go to town getting it just right,
Get a few thousand miles on it.
Take the safety course.
Prove you won't drop it every three months.
You'll be pissed if you dump a ton of hours and cash in it and dump it.

Learn how to do the maintenance.

You really have a need to research , you probably don't need to address the tensioner yet with only 8,200 miles . perhaps you should look first. It might be better to spend your money on a front pulley cover. It's is a nice looking bike for being that age! Welcome !

I'd get it running good, and ride it.
No mods, just ride.
Read, enjoy the forum, read about riding technique, enjoy the forum, ride, enjoy the forum, etc etc etc..

I tend to agree with JOG on this point, ride and enjoy and scheme your mods while doing this. The Dave front pulley might be the most sensible performance enhancing mod, although you need to study his posts on this subject.

Welcome, and as you being a first time rider I will agree with Justin_o_guy, take a rider safety or training course. Though it seems simple there is much to learn, and practice before you "hit the road is paramount". Riding safety is a serious matter and you can't just assume how you drive a car is applicable to how you operate a motorcycle.

I won't delve into minutiae of detail, but what I will tell you is, if you take a course you will realize how many people who ride have no clue what they are doing, and after you take a course when you drive you will see just how few people who ride understand what it is to do it safely.

Things like not wearing proper clothing and gear, riding in the blind spot of car mirrors, not approaching every intersection they ride through with evaluating escape routes and not leaving clearance to cars ahead of them at traffic lights.

Education for all new riders is key to your own safety. The thing that will surprise anyone who takes a course is how many folks who have bikes and ride already, fail the thing on their first attempt.

When I toke the basic course, there was a guy who had a Hayabusa, had taken the course previosly and failed for attendance, failed a second time because he just didn't pass, yet he is on the road riding a 130mph machine.

I would also agree with ride it, get to know it and go from there.

You will drop your first bike...a few times.
You will accidentally knock it over in the driveway/garage
You will make maintenance mistakes
You will outgrow your first bike much faster than you thought

Money and time well spent...
Rider training
Helmet
Gloves
Boots
Pants
Cold weather gear
Bike-to-Bike communication (if you ride with friends)...speaking of which...

The BEST way to learn a lot about motorcycles is to get involved with a group (or two) of riders and believe only 40% of what they tell you...discover the origins of the other 60%.

First, I have a crapload of parts for the 88 including a couple of those belt covers if you need one.

Second, while I agree with the others, you should do what you want to do.  If you want to build it then build it.  My advice here is don't be the guy who tears it apart and never gets it back together. It's your first bike take it one step at a time.

If it were me, I'd follow the advice given above.  You should ride it and make sure it is fully operational before you start taking it apart. Fix one thing at a time.  If something doesn't work, you'll know where to look.  Once you get past that and you start building.  I recommend doing it in stages unless you are an experienced builder.  Do a part of the build that you can complete, put it back together and ride it.   Then move on to the next phase.

Good luck and enjoy the ride.

A couploe of other things, try to establish the brand and AGE of your tyres, the Shinko brand is well liked on this site. Study up basic oil and filter changining. The rear brake is prone to lock up, be careful and don't just use the rear brake. An MSF course will teach you to syncronise your braking.

Shipping and PayPal fees rounded up to the nearest $5.  But you being in LA, you might want to see what Verslagen1 has since he's in your area.  He has a ton of parts (or is that Lancer in OK??)
