Should I buy $150 used 412 Progressive shocks?
10/24/18 at 20:27:08

Hello. I found used 412 Progressive shock with 12.5".
Price posted as $150. Is it worth to buy and it will fit on 08 model?
I had a back surgery so sometime after riding dumps give me a back pain.
How much comfortable I can be if I switch to Progressive?
Please give me advise. Thank you guys.

a much better buy is used intruder shocks, 11.5" or so.

you'll need to check the model for travel and spring force
I have a set and they're too light for my lardass.
so we'll need your weight to compare.

I have used Progressive 412 shocks on my Cafe build, and I have ridden about 8,000 miles on them - but I am currently switching to a different shock.

The 412 is really set up for a Sportster, and the springs and damping is way too stiff for the light Savage......even after  put a lighter set of springs on they still ride too stiffly - the shocks just don't react to all the small bumps in the pavement and the ride is very choppy.

http://www.hagonshocksusa.com/

Because...
Reasonably priced* for the basic Road Shock or the more adjustable 2810.
Optional spring rates.
Optional damping rates to match spring rate.
They sell replacement dampers.

* The price list on their site is from 2016 so YRMV.

YSS shocks are very good, too.

https://www.yss.co.th/downloads/20160226052050.pdf

I used the ones intended for SR500 and the spring rate was spot on for a 80kg rider. Quite a bit longer than stock, but the list shows spring rates so it's easy to compare.

The Progressive 412 series is a twin tube design. They are cheap, and designed that way.

There's a lot more to shocks then just the spring rate. The spring is there to support the combined weight of the bike, rider and accessories - allowing for a full range of motion. That's it.

Damping determines the speed at which the shock will compress and rebound. This is where ride comfort and handling arise. The exception to this is a spring rate that is too high or too low - this leads to a shock that is harsh (too much rate) or bottoms out easily (too little rate)  and all of the damping in the world wont help.

Being a twin tube design, the 412's have nonadjustable damping. You get what it is. As Dave mentioned, they are sprung (changable) and the damping has been set for a bike that is significantly heavier than the S40.

There are better and workable shocks available for the same money. Check my suspension thread. http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1498156004

$150  is too much for those shocks used, if you shop around you can find them NEW for about that much.

One of the issues with the stock shocks - is that they only have 1.5" of travel.  They have to be stiffly sprung as there is not much travel.

If you want a softer/smoother ride, the replacement shocks need to be a bit longer so there is more travel available.  I believe the stock shocks are 10.5" long, and something around 11.5" - 12" is OK to keep the Cruiser look - when we convert the bike to a Cafe' or Tracker look we are using 13" - 13.5" long shocks.

Looking at what I can find around the web The shocks on our bikes are the same specs as the rear of a Harley
10.5 inch eye to eye 8mm dia spring wire and 60 mm coil dia

As the LS 650 /S40 is much lighter than a Harley then I guess its not surprising that it is hard riding.  So far I have  raised the seat front fitted a
140/90-15 rear tyre and a seat pad and have the shocks on the softest setting  All of these things have helped but it is not there yet to my mind
As Dave has said it looks like longer stroke softer shocks will be next for me
I am not short legged so extra height wont be a problem
