Starter just hums
09/27/18 at 12:20:19

My starter magnets came un glued so I sent ahead and just got a brand new starter. I threw it in and is still not starting. I can hear it humming like it's trying to move but it isn't. I pulled it and tested it or if the bike it moves perfect. But in the bike there like something keeping it from spinning. Am I missing something?

Have you taken off the left engine case recently?

Not lately. I don't have anything to support the bike when the kickstand is off. I did use a little snake with a camera on the end to look in. Couldn't see anything or of the ordinary. Should be a plug and play right?

I ask about the left engine cover, as you can mistakenly put a washer on the rear starter gear, and there is no room for a washer there and it locks up the starter (both washers go on the torque limiting idler gear).

Do you know for certain the engine is not locked up?  Can you put the bike in gear and get the engine to run over.....or remove the timing inspection cover and turn the engine over with a 17mm socket wrench?

I had be riding it before night starter gave out on me about a week and a half ago. I thought for sure it couldn't be locked up. Just to be 100% I did use a 17mm socket to turn it over today so I know it's good. I checked I had 12v yesterday thinking the battery drained and didn't have enough juice to turn the engine over.  Am I going up have to open that side up?

the question is when the starter engages, does the starter stall?
It could be the decomp adjustment.
If it's too loose, compression won't be released and will stall the starter.
If it's too tight, it will take more turns to start.
If it starts on the 1st turn, it may be too loose.  And occasionally may stall if the engine stops near the compression stroke.
Easy way to check is to put it in 4th and bump it forward (not reverse) to get it past the compression stroke.  Then give it a whirl.

Don't run the starter more than a minute w/out giving it time to cool off... say 15 minutes.
That's most likely why you lost the magnets on the 1st one.

The starter doesn't turn when pressed. There's nothing to stall if it won't move.

You have an '86.
I think you'll need to open the stator cover and take a peek.

You sure you got a Suzuki starter?
I've been told those Mazdas do hum.

The suggestion to pull the stator cover is so you can check out the gears. Early models can break them when the motor bounces off the compression when it gets shut off.

Which way did you rotate the motor? If you rotated it at all clockwise ,you may have jammed the starter gears?

I rotated it counter-clockwise just as I would when adjusting the valves.
