It could be the decomp adjustment.
If it's too loose, compression won't be released and will stall the starter.
If it's too tight, it will take more turns to start.
If it starts on the 1st turn, it may be too loose. And occasionally may stall if the engine stops near the compression stroke.
Easy way to check is to put it in 4th and bump it forward (not reverse) to get it past the compression stroke. Then give it a whirl.
Don't run the starter more than a minute w/out giving it time to cool off... say 15 minutes.
That's most likely why you lost the magnets on the 1st one.
