Shifter ?
09/25/18 at 21:53:56

Today I went for a ride to analyse why some of my shifts are less than smooth/perfect. I've concluded that the knob on the lever is at the end of my big toe, rather than at the point where my toe joins the foot.

Sounds funny, but if I could find a shorter lever, I think I can prove it.

Anyone ever change their lever? Cheers! Cool

You're alone in your thinking.
Nobody has ever reported that shifting problems were due to a too long shifter lever.
Are you wearing flip flops?
Upshifts and downshift equally problematic?

both. my foot hits the lever at the end of my boot, I'd like it to be closer.  Just playing with this idea for now, but I've been thinking about it for a long time. Mini footboards may be an answer. Cool

Damboy, what size shoe you wear?
The thing lands on top of my toe, behind the steel toe, on the Red Wings.
You got the heel against the peg?

You're sure the rod isn't bent?

Snot the bikes..
It's you.
Slide your boot forward on the peg until your heel hits it.

Before you spend too much time on your analysis, crawl under your bike and make sure your shift linkage is not bent.

How many miles on the oil? What is the oil level? Is your belt at the correct tension?

All of these effect shifting.

I'll plead guilty to maybe having a lazy foot, but I'd still like to try a shorter lever. Over winter, I'll sort one out. Oil is fresh. Cheers! Cool

Make sure the ball joints (or whatever the technical name is) in the linkage are greased well under the rubber boots. Made a noticeable difference for me when I lubed mine.

Sort of related, had anyone else noticed a balky upshift into fifth?  Sometimes I have to do a double tap to get it into fifth.

Every now and then I will hit a false neutral during the 4-5 shift.

I always keep gentle pressure on the lever until it goes into gear. Most times it is not necessary but when it hangs up I just keep a bit of pressure on the lever. This is just one of the quirks of our Zuki. Smiley

Yep. Before I got to know my bike and how to minimize this by being easier on the shift, racking through the gears hard and fast almost always did this.

Cool.  Seems RPM related to me.  Quick bottom end shifts seem smooth, hard top end shifts to 5th seem reliable, but it seems to balk at the run of the mill midrange pop to 5th.   Mine has done this since the day I bought it. I figured it was a quirk, but figured I'd ask.
