I think his thought is that if his house is gone he has no where to go. Basically a sad way of committing suicide. And yes this guy is usually found dead, I remember one case from Mt Saint Helens.

I have no data or references, this is based off of my observations of activities by elderly persons in previous disaster areas. These observations when compiled and posted represent my opinion.
