Is it bad to ride on the passenger seat?
09/02/18 at 06:19:44

I am a pretty big guy for the S40, at 6'3 and 230lb, and lately I found that I'm much more comfortable riding while sitting on the passenger seat. I love the taller seating position and I get to comfortably stretch my legs and arms. But I wonder if its safe to ride like this, since all the weight is over the rear wheel?

You're lightening the front end a lot...
Careful on take-off and turns...

You might consider the seat lift mod in the Tech Section.  Cool
I'm only 5' 8" and have the seat raised 2" and 2" oversized rear shocks.

Seat lift is pretty complicated, and still does not solve the issues of being able to stretch out arms.

Drag bars will require you to reach farther and lean your upper body over the tank,  helping,  (but not curing) to shift some weight back to the front of the bike to stabilize steering control.

I don't get it, it's exactly opposite of what I would consider a correct riding position. As an old racer, I'm use to the "attack" position.

I agree with the others, your desired riding position puts the bike out of balance and makes the front end inherently unstable.

I'm 6'3" and I used to pop my tushy on the passenger seat once in a while to stretch my legs before I modified my bike.  I wouldn't spend much time there.  It's not a very safe position to ride from.

I've been thinking about getting a bigger bike, and I test drove a BMW R1200R, and while its a bigger overall bike, it feels even smaller - I cant stretch my legs or arms at all.

Looking for advice on a new bike for a taller rider. I am mostly interested in "standard" type of bike - not sport or cruiser.

I believe R1200R is considered a standard?

Is this what you are going for? Looks like the rider is getting ready for his gynecological exam.

Well I'm only 6ft ,but I've got a 34" inseam ,to be comfortable an adjust the bike for more leg room,  you either have to move your butt back or up . Some (me included) have gone to a HD sportster seat (custom mounted) which does both. a basically flat Triumph seat is an other way to go. That's the beauty of a savage ,you can make it your own.

You can move controls forward.
The old two piece seat is much more comfortable. I'm only 5'6" and I used to sit up on the back seat on longer rides.

I had an 05 model with drag bars, health caused me to sell, a few years later I got better, and now I'm riding an 02 with buckhorns and the two piece seat. I like it lots better. Windscreen, saddle bags and a 1954 Lucerne milk crate sideways across the seat. I can haul stuff..

I've messed around a lot with the seat and handlebars, trying to get the right fit for me. I'm only 5'8" and have short legs (and a long torso) but I still needed to allow myself to move back on the seat, and to reach further forward to the handlebars. I have a lot of trouble getting anything to fit me 'off the rack'.

You can modify the seat, for more wriggle room, if you move the rectify from under the seat (mine is now in the toolbox - tools are in a tool roll on the handlebar). Then I cut the bump out of the seat pan and reshaped the foam to give a longer driver's seat and to reduce the angle of the transition between front and back seat. This allows me to move back a bit on the seat. In fact, I can shuffle forward if I'm running through the twisties, and back to get some forward lean on the highway.

As for the handle bars, I found the pullback on the stock tall risers and narrow drag bars brought the handlebars too close to me. Some people turn the risers around (I personally don't like that look). I experimented with different risers and bars until I got what I was after - a pair of 'Z Bars' with a 6" rise did the trick - less pull back and the right height.

Ed.L's forward controls will give you more leg room. Many users here love them. I ran with them for a while, but in the end I removed them as I got the result I was looking for with the above-mentioned mods. And besides, with my short legs, the forward controls reduced my handling too much.
