New Guy Here!
08/29/18 at 16:57:54

Just wanted to introduce myself.  I picked up an 87 Savage over the weekend for 600 bucks.  It's in rough shape but I'm hoping to get her back in shape over the next few months.

Welcome Clyde.  I predict you will have that BadBoy in top shape in no time flat.  Have fun with your project.  We are all ready to assist.

Best regards, Mike

Doesn't look that ruff ! the only thing I see wrong is that clutch cable laying across the exhaust header and cooling fins. You'll need to go to lower bars or a longer cable ( It should be run down the back bone of the frame and down next to the speedometer cable) Welcome !

It runs and revs good.  Previous owner lowed the idle speed to get that thump-thump sound so that will be one of the first things I fix.  Front brake is non-functional, I think because the bike was laid down and the lever is really bent.  The bondo job on the rear fender combined with the rattle can paint job is really bad but that can fixed over the winter. I definitely need new clutch and throttle cables.  I like the bars so I need to figure out how to get a decent measurement and find a place that can make me some custom length ones.

Previous owner lowed the idle speed to get that thump-thump sound so that

Deadly for the cam.
Idling on the sidestand is bad for the cam.
Low oil pressure at idle is normal.
It's not deadly, at recommended idle.
But lower than that, and the cam can starve.
On the sidestand the high end is above the the oil galley so it Will screw up.
Regardless of idle speed.
