Turn signals started flashing very slowly
08/23/18 at 16:28:52

Hey everyone,

I started noticing yesterday that my 2013’s turn signals take about 3 to 5 seconds to start flashing.  Everything is stock. When they do flash, it’s a lot slower than normal with occasional hesitation.  Same happens when I use the hazard switch.  I opened the turn signal switch and I couldn’t see any corrosion and was fairly clean , though I didn’t take the whole thing apart.  Anyone familiar with this problem or maybe have a troubleshooting suggestion?

Thanks!
Trevor

Did you put a volt meter on it to see if it was charging?y

I don’t have a voltmeter so no, haven’t tried that.  I commute to work on this daily, have a relatively new battery and so far it fires right up.  Not sure why that would impact the speed of my flashers though.

it could be resistance in the connector.
try polishing up the bulb and go from there.

dielectric grease in all the connectors can't hurt.

I look at grounds when stuff starts misbehaving.

Or - there is the possibility that the mechanical flasher is going bad and needs to be replaced.

Solid state flasher units can be installed....some have found one that is a "pug and play" for the Suzuki unit.

The flasher unit is under the tank, on the right side of the upper frame tube, it has 2 wires and is mounted in a rubber sleeve.

Thanks for all the replies guys.  I'll looks into everyone's suggestions.

I did find and pulled the flasher unit under the tank and everything looked real clean with no corrosion.  When I pulled it the lights stayed on ( no flashing), when I replaced no change to the sluggish performance.  At around $43 for a new unit online, I may give that a try.

Also will pick up some dielectric grease for some of the connections.

Can anyone point me to a diagram or the like where I would check the grounds for such a problem?

Thanks,
Trevor

Other, much less expensive, flashers fit.
You don't have a reason to spend a dime yet.

I have a version of this unit on all three of my bikes. Works with LED and incandescent bulbs. If this doesn't look like an exact fit, look at the other units (second link). For less than $10 you'll fix the existing condition, and will be future-ready for an LED upgrade.

Thanks Gary,That's a much better price.  Will be checking for corrosion in the sockets this weekend.

Is the horn good?
Headlight?
If you have emergency flashers, check them.
You might get it isolated to a switch or ground.

I've been using a round flasher for a car for years, and even  runs with my led  turn signals .

If both sides are slow, then forget about bulbs and oxidation on contacts.
Unless you can believe all four are equally screwed up.

Justin,
Yes, all bulbs are real slow to start and blink slower after they get going front and back, turn signal (left and right) and hazards alike.  Headlight and horn do continue working, though I did have a loose harness on the left side that did cause the headlight and horn to stop working a few months back.  That hasn’t been a problem as of late, though I suppose maybe could be a cause.

I haven’t had a chance today but will look at all the connections tomorrow.  I wasn’t sure if having an issue with one bulb could throw the whole system off or not.
