Engine mounting
08/21/18 at 09:04:00

Howdy
Just had frame powder coated and now ready to install the engine. Working by myself, so wondering if anyone has any tricks or suggestions as how to mount without scratching the hell of my new coated frame...have heard of laying engine and frame on its side, but seems a bit tricky getting the position correct for the lower mounting bolts...

thanks in advance.

I lay some heavy hardboard strips across the frame, then I heft the engine in the frame - then start pulling out cardboard as needed to get the bolts in place.  I can get it done by myself using this method.

I can see that laying the engine on it's side and dropping the frame sideways on top could also work.......provided you have a friend there to help.  You will need to have the engine a bit above the floor to make this possible.

You might try wrapping areas of the frame with painters tape to help protect it. it's easily removed and shouldn't damage the paint.

It's not easy to lay it on it's side and get the engine in place.
I've used a hoist to drop it into the frame w/out much issue.
the frame leans a bit on the kickstand, so set up a choker around the cylinder and put a bolt thru an upper rear hole with the same lean.
You can use the bolt to adjust the lean as it drops in.
Powder coat is supposed to be more durable than paint so have at it.

I draped an old towel over the frame cradle and hung the engine from the top lug on a chain hoist.  Then slowly lowered the engine into the frame, rotating the frame slightly to get the bottom of the engine in.

Just two man the engine. It isn't that heavy, just awkward to handle. Two people can easily carry and place the engine in position without scratching anything.

For jobs like this I like to use multiple methods. Tape off the frame. Use rags and cardboard as needed. Get help setting the engine. Last thing you wanna do is mess up fresh paint!
