Intermittent Squeak - maybe from drive pulley?
08/13/18 at 10:34:18

Hi all!
I found some threads about noises, including some mention of the drive pulley, like this Verslagen post:

http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1403194022/6#6

But I just wanted to add some information for your consideration...
-My noise is a high pitch squeaky sound, and it pulses like a turning bearing... squeak-squeak-squeak-squeak
-It mostly seems to occur when the belt isn't being pulled... that is, when I open the throttle and the engine is tugging on the belt, then the sound ceases... if I pull-in the clutch lever, and coast, and the belt isn't being pulled, then that's when the squeak seems to happen most.

Does that information sort of narrow it down as to what my problem is?

I will be looking into the flywheel nut and the rotor nut - just thought I would throw those symptoms into the mix.

Thanks, guys!

The flywheel nut makes a horrible banging noise when it is loose....no squeaks.

Check that your belt is not too tight, and check that your rear pulley does not wobble when you pull on the front/back of the pulley and try to wobble it.  (If it wobbles.....look up the floor mat shim in the Technical Section).

You can use Dave's guide, or this one that I did. I used the same material, just didn't break them all into separate pieces.

I may actually have one left somewhere.  It's not a perfect laser cut piece, but it'll do the job.  PM me with our address if you want it.

On facebook, one guy said he wire brushed the drive pulley and the noise went away.

Or you can get a jardine.

I'd be taking a serious look at the nut that holds the front pulley on,  if it's loose (torque should be 74to 90 ft/lbs) the pulley could be moving in and out ,depending on load, and scraping the raised ridges on the back of the cover plate, worse yet it could be damaging the splines on the pulley and drive shaft.

The easiest test is buy Gulf canning wax at the grocery store, rub some on the edges of the belt and the teeth. If it changes the noise, you're onto something.
