The Air Force doesn't already actively defend our satellites.

 I'm not sure a whole new branch is the answer, but due to our reliance on satellites for pretty much everything its a good idea to keep an eye out for tech that can disable them.

 AF collects intel but there's no active programs designed specifically for the purpose of countering some of the claimed, yet unproven tech that Russia and China want to develop for targeting objects in space.
