My 2006 S40 + small mods
06/11/18 at 14:42:50

About two months ago I took the MSF course that Ohio offers. Right after I had a discussion with my wife about buying a bike. Basically I was advised that if I did so without a lot of out of pocket cash, and using assets I already owned, I wouldn't hear a peep from her.

About a month and a half ago I saw an ad on Craigslist for a 2006 Suzuki Boulevard S40, guy I bought it from said he had some health issues and needed to get rid of it. Turns out those health issues were serious, so I made him a trade + cash deal he couldn't turn down.

When I drove home with her in the back of my truck, I was freakin' excited. A two hour drive just to go and get her, and man was it a pain in the ass getting her out of the back of the truck. Had to call a friend over because I wasn't going to try to ride it down the ramps, that's a good way to lose your ramps.

As I found out, someone had already done an airbox delete, installed a cone filter, installed a cone breather, appears to have replaced the carb, etc. There's an AGM battery in there that is just great, and there are battery tender leads on it, though I've never needed to use it... so I use them for something else, now.

When I got her in the garage, I took some beauty shots.

Just a couple from each angle to note how she was when I first got her.

So one of the first things I wanted to do was make sure that I could ride her to work with khakis on because this little lady was my getting around town bike for the next year.

I installed a DEI Titanium wrap on it, but in the meantime I also removed the terrible shield that someone had put on the muffler.

After that, I decided it was time for some proper saddlebags, just so I could tote stuff around, take her on trips, etc.

Viking Bags was having a pretty decent 15% off sale and so I got some Large bags with the shock cutout. They actually fit quite well, and I ended up removing the spacers I originally used.

In order to install them I had to relocate my rear blinker lights. In order to do that, I decided I needed to wire extensions in the right way... So I grabbed some waterproof connectors that I had left over from the last electrical project I did on the pickup, and went to town.

Did I forget to mention, I really and truly hate the stock lights? So I got another set locally at Iron Pony, ones that are very bright with incandescent bulbs that I can easily change to LED, and put them on instead.

The nice thing is... the bags came with the relocation bar.

I futzed around with the sissy bar for awhile. Thinking I might like it... using the universal mounts that came with the bike to put a universal gear rack on too...

I ran into a snag at one point. I went to take the exhaust off so I could apply some high temp silicone paint to the wrap... and wouldn't you know it, twisted off the exhaust bolt.

Backed it out, finally. So I went looking for a tap and I couldn't find mine. So I ordered a set but got impatient. During that time I thought "I'll cut some gaps into a bolt and just cut it like that, it's worked before" -- it didn't work, that bolt also twisted off.

So I tried to back it out, broke the extractor in it. So after a lot of dremeling and hitting it with a center punch, I shattered/broke free the carbide. Then I dremeled the bolt from the inside, which ate into the threads.

So... I ended up installing a helicoil, which has done the trick. But I'm still half tempted to rip the bolts out and replace them with studs because that was a giant pain in the ass.

I did eventually get the exhaust off, painted, and put back on. It came out pretty good. I also installed a heatshield further down on the muffler to protect dress pants.

So I decided to install the windshield she came with. It was a memphis slim and I needed to order another clamp for it, but it looked pretty good... and it made me confident enough to ride it on the highway at 75mph.

So one other thing I needed, a brighter head lamp. The one it had was not amazing... off to amazon I go. I went full LED on my F150, I know headlight tech has come a LONG way in a short period, so I went looking for a good H4 bulb to install.
