15mm extension on cam chain tensioner
06/06/18 at 04:38:26

Has anyone actually measured the extension on a new bike? I know there have been some posts suggesting this but I've yet to see one.

Just checked mine today and it was extended by 15mm, just wondering how long it would take to get into the danger zone, it has 25,000kms on it so far.

my guess is 9mm to start with.
You can expect 1000 mile per mm.  It's probably twice that, but leave yourself some margin.

I checked mine at about 1100 miles on a 2016 S40.  As I recall it was at 12.5 mm.  The bike was stock at that time.

Same thing with me.....12.5mm on a bike with 1,200 miles.

I just put in a new cam chain, and the tensioner went  out to 10mm.

So assuming mine was 12.5 at 1200miles that would mean that it's extended another 2.5mm during the last 14k miles!

When the extender gets to say 19mm or whatever is the maximum, 20? does that mean that it is time for a new timing chain.

I have looked at all the tensioner threads and searched for timing chain replacement but I am unable to find any info on this. Is this a shade tree job, or is this a 'take it into the shop' job to replace the timing chain. And if the timing chain is replace before the plunger is all the way out so it is not damaged, does that mean that the old plunger can be used with the new timing chain?

Yes or switch to the second hole on an extended plunger.

This was the 1st major engine repair that I did, if you're doing most of your work already then you are capable of doing this.

Just look it over to see if it's ovaled out.
Might not be a deal breaker, but something to look at
