Carberator issue
05/21/18 at 15:10:43

Just obtained a 2001 Savage for the GF. It sat up for many years, so we changed the oil, replaced plug and coil, replaced tires and inner tubes, and replaced air filter and battery.

It ran decently well until it started leaking gas. Then it wouldn't start. I replaced the petcock with the raptor, and bought a Mikuni VM38-9 carb. Went to install the carb and realized it doesn't have a throttle plate like the original. Started doing research and realized that I need more to install this carb.

So, that being said, can someone point me at a throttle cable that will work and anything else I need to make this carb work on an otherwise stock savage?
Jets? Other required mods/parts?

Thanks!
Mike

Look in the Market Place section, then in Lancers Performance Parts, and then Performance Carburetor Kit.
It lists what I include in the carb kit and you can purchase any of those items.  Let me know what you want and I will price it, including shipping.

Actually I am still recovering.
Did not get much done today.
Packed a few orders, stopped by to see my mom and went to the chiropractor to get straightened out.

So I looked through your posts, but am not 100% sure what all I need.
I've gathered I need the cable, flange, and jets at a minimum.
What's the point of the "fuel filter"? Doesn't the petcock already have the fuel filter on it?

Eventually I will want to do the cam and rockers, but don't really want to break down the motor right now. It has less than 7k miles on it.

What jets do you recommend with the VM38 on an otherwise stock savage?

Ugh!  I can't reply to your message because I'd post count limits. I get the limit for initiating a pm, but to reply? That's stupid. I'm on my phone right now, so when u get to work tomorrow I'll get my post count up so I can reply.

Thanks!!

Get into the current "Oil War" thread....that is always good for making multiple posts and time wasting!

Ok, so this was put on hold for a while (clearly) due to more pressing things (her Jeep). I am just about finished with the Jeep and need to focus on getting this bike back on the road. I am still in the same position I was when I started this thread.

Lance, is there a kit I can just buy that includes all the parts I need to get this carburetor working on this bike? I'm not looking for performance, perse, I just need it working for her to be happy. Do you have a website with the parts kit listed?

Also, still don't have my post count up, lol. I'll work on that.

putergod, Maybe      you       should    think     about     ten     words ,     one      in      each   of   ten    posts   (it's been done before)
You said it ran great until it started leaking gas . Where was the gas leaking from?

I don't understand why you would throw a new carb, that probably isn't even jetted for your bike, at a bike that ran perfectly fine before it spewed a little gas.

Did you even attempt to run it with the original carb after replacing the petcock?

Or even attempt to clean and reuse the stock carb ? It was just dirty ,not destroyed .

Ok, so.... I had to rebuild two cars which put this bike back on the back burner. So, for the third time I am going to try and get this thing running again.

I will answer the questions in separate posts (to hit the limit).

Yes I did, and I disassembled the carb and cleaned the heck out of it, but it still leaked like a sieve. This is why I bought, what should be, a better carb to put on it.
