First Chinese 7nm production chipset -- Huawei 980

https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/04/09/huawei-mate-20-antutu-listing-appears-r...

Take a look at this chart and try to get used to not seeing English and not seeing a Qualcomm or Samsung processor at the top of the listing.

Yes, Samsung and Qualcomm have already made and shipped their first 7nm chipsets and Huawei is simply doing what they do best, going intentionally a little later than the big boys with a MUCH larger AI block that is custom tuned to make the Antutu test all happy (among other things).

And yes, Huawei is rumored to be making up a Far Eastern tuned version of an Android OS, something that intentionally matches up to and maximizes the Chinese and Indian Internet and Cell Phone tower systems throughput and performance traits.

Note please that if you live in India or China and use primarily Huawei based network equipment and services this rating number is "relatively" more accurate and real.   Huawei network services and phones really don't match up to USA services nearly as well any more, so a US sold Mate 20 wouldn't do nearly these sorts of numbers if tested in the USA.

But, if tested on Chinese or Indian internet and cellular backbones, the numbers ring through much much closer to real.

China is flat out attacking the USA historic dominance position on 5G, on Internet Backbone tech and cellular radio hardware also with the phones themselves (on both cost, memory and features).

It is rumored that at least one of the big four USA cell service companies was indeed planning on rolling over to begin their 5G expansion using the cheaper faster Chinese tech instead of Qualcomm tech ---- and the USA regulators and government agencies have acted to flat put the kibosh on that as it would give China ready access to all of American everything since chunks of the USA net would be flowing through Chinese equipment.

The recent merger between Sprint and T-Mobile is also intended to put the resulting enlarged T-Mobile firmly back under the USA regulator's thumb control again as Sprint had gotten a little too wild and woolly to suit Trump's outlooks on picking up systems backbone hardware from the orient.

The Big Wait for it ......

Qualcomm and Samsung have got to show a reply to the Huawei 980 fairly soon or else start to lose their market share as Huawei will start selling these Kirin 980 SoCs to other Chinese companies pretty soon if that primo class processor demand isn't filled by the normal sources.

Last year's  Huawei primo chipset, the 970, is shipping in Xiaomi's phones as we speak.   Mediatek is the one losing ground with all this China on Chinese Chips action, as they grew 3 of their largest customers into 3 large new competitors in just a year's time.

Huawei has shown us that the A75 ARM generation gets a 40% speed bump from 7nm using TSMC Gen 1 technology, with the upcoming Gen 2 likely getting a 20% production efficiency cost reduction and a milder additional speed bump.

It is also clear there is enough speed and power in A75 at 7nm to run a laptop, fairly easily.   What we really lack is enough Mickey balls to actually go do it, as they are still hanging on to Wintel and refusing to actually go on over to ARM.

This is not going to stop the Chinese from making their own laptops as they have no invested past in Wintel to protect.    Did I mention Huawei is currently working on their own customized Android based windowing OS ????   I think I did, several times .....   last count there were 3 of these oriental Android windowing OS's for Huawei to pick between, with two of the three being open source and free to use.

Somebody is gonna start shipping something off of the next generation of stronger ARM Holdings designs fairly soon and then ARM will expose their newest replacement technology and all the stuff that is planned for the 5nm generations (our next 2 years out).

Then Google will come out with their new plan for Fuchsia OS and then (and only then) MS Windows will finally grow enough stones to actually dump the "Intel only" thing.

We hear deep rumble sounds ......

..... change, she comes once again ......

http://fortune.com/2015/11/24/xiaomi-windows-tablet/

Soon, Xiaomi may be known for making laptop computers.

The Chinese company announced on Tuesday that it intends to sell a tablet running Windows 10 by the end of this quarter. The device is Xiaomi’s first to use Microsoft’s operating system and will be followed the next month by Xiaomi's first clamshell laptop system running Win10.

Although the global PC market—Windows computers, mostly—shrunk over 10% in the most recent quarter, some computer makers see Windows tablet sales as an opportunity to return to growth. Microsoft has enticed its hardware partners to make smaller Windows tablets in the past by significantly discounting its licensing fee for devices with screens under nine inches.

Microsoft is being told it that by its own stupid actions Microsoft is acting as the biggest drag on the Global PC market at this time.

You got the Chinese Central Committee controlled big three Chinese phone makers all making their own chipsets now, swapping older SoC designs between themselves, and making concerted market attacks at any weak points of the world PC market.

Get all of them acting in concert behind a new "China for the Chinese" Windowing Android OS and Mickey would have some real issues to deal with.

https://liliputing.com/2018/05/hps-new-business-laptops-are-powered-by-ryzen-...

HP’s new business laptops are powered by Ryzen chips

HP is updating its EliteBook 700 and ProBook 600 line of business-class laptops with a new set of models that are all powered by AMD Ryzen chips.

The new HP EliteBook 735 G5, EliteBook 745 G5, and EliteBook 755 G5 will sell for $999 and up, while the new HP ProBook 645 G4 has a starting price of $759. All four laptops should be available this month.

You can figure out the screen size for each laptop by looking at the middle number: the EliteBook 735 has a 13.3 inch display, for example, while the ProBook and EliteBook 745 both have 14 inch displays.

So let’s take a look at the specs for the smallest model:

HP EliteBook 735 G5

Display: 13.3 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel IPS display (with 220 nit touch and non-touch options, or a 220 nit touchscreen option)

Processor: AMD Ryzen 3 2300U, Ryzen 5 2500U, or Ryzen 7 2700U processor options

Memory: Up to 32GB DDR4-2400 (2 SODIMM slots)

Storage: 128GB or 256GB SATA SSD, 512GB M.2 SATA SSD, or 256GB or 512GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD

Ports: 1 USB Type-C, two USB Type-A, HDMI, Ethernet, headset
Audio: B&O stereo speakers and multi-array mics
Cameras: HD camera + HD IR webcam (for Windows Hello) plus ambient light sensor
Battery: 50 Whr (with USB-C charger)
Dimensions: 12.2″ 9″ x 0.7″
Weight: 2.94 pounds (non-touch) or 3.32 pounds (touch)

HP says the laptop will be available with a choice of Windows 10 Pro or Home, or FreeDOS 2.0.

That last line is interesting -- this is for all the Linux users who do not want to pay MS tax on their finished units because they have NO PLANS to use Windows at all.   Plus, since you have to contract separately with the Microsoft Store to get your final version of your Windows OS anyway, it makes no difference if they ship it to you with FreeDOS or with Windows Lite (so save the money).

So, not only does Intel gets the boot, but Windows does as well.

New stuff for the month ----

Apple cranks up 4th line of 2nd generation 7nm at TSMC's new lithography building to run off their new A12 chipset en masse.

Both Huawei and Apple have "machine learning" or AI built into their current big boy chipset designs now.   So do Qualcomm and Samsung.

ARM Holdings has now come out with most of the "Project Trillium" details finally (as this newest version is getting shipped as part of several new phone processor sets now).
The fog of secrecy is clearing away at last .....

https://www.anandtech.com/show/12791/arm-details-project-trillium-mlp-archite...

Trillium is now running at gen 2 level and it has a new 3x internal multiplier effect working that applies to the 4.6 TOPS execution speed.   Look at the second and third slides and read the article.

It is all being run off now at TSMC's 2nd gen 7nm lithography levels and Google is applying this new level of processing power into current Android generation, and into current Google proprietary tools such as Google Assistant and Google MAPS.

Your 4.6 TOPS (x3 multiplier on top of that) Trillium processor is arguably a lot more powerful than your main processor and GPU combined, but AS A PACKAGE all three main items are now being utilized to speed your phone along as it does its work.   This is all being sped along by the use of copious amounts of new faster non-volatile memory and the fact the executeables are all done RIGHT NOW -- things get done so so much faster this aids the battery life still more.

At 7nm, your 2018 new phone can do much much more than before, do it more efficiently and do it using even less battery than before.

As has been said before, recent AI speed increases are much more significant than CPU increases and that effect is now catching levels of multiplication that are quite frankly quite shocking and amazing to see when laid out in front of you.   I mean 4.6 trillions operations per second, and then that gets a 3x MULTIPLIER effect now ????   Wow ....

Yup, 4.6 TOPS (with a 3x multiplier for compression tuning) and this is in a thing you can hold in your hand
and keep in your breast pocket .....        Shocked

Roll Eyes       ..... and this stuff is getting better and better ongoing (quite quickly, too).

Do you remember the Turing Test ???   It tests the maturity level of an AI system, AI has "matured" when you cannot tell you are in conversation with a machine instead of a person.

We are not there quite yet, but are getting closer.    Your Google Assistant can hold up its end of a conversation now with only a little bit of rough machine still showing ......
