extended fork tubes...
04/26/18 at 17:54:41

Anyone running plus 4s or plus 6 fork tubes? trying to decide which length to go with. I was pretty dead set on plus 4's but now i'm considering the 6's possibly. Thoughts, pictures, experience? Thanks.

4's look okay as is if you don't mind it sitting higher in the front. Any longer than that will require frame modifications or raked trees.

Due to the Savage's 35 degree neck angle anything over 4 " may cause flex in the tubes themselves , as the tubes become longer the neck angle increases.

I went with 3 over tubes for a few reasons.
1.  modding something for the kickstand is impractical and after using wood blocks to adjust for height I decided that 3" more height was the tallest I could go without the bike leaning too far over on the stand.
2.  My bike is an 08 model and the brake line is just long enough to fit when I changed to the shortest risers I could find that would still allow the stock bars to clear the tank.

I plan on modifying my kicker or replacing it so not a big deal. Also I have ape hangers so ill be getting longer lines regardless. Where'd you get your plus threes from?

Franks forks.  It was cheaper to call him and order direct than it was to go through some of the websites that order from him and then mark up.

If anything, I would go shorter. I can't think of anything positive with going longer.

It all depends on your goals....and wants from your motorcycle.

For better handling....lower the front 2", raise the back 2".

For "badass" looks......longer forks! Wink

Straight line stability is one positive gain if it is done right. There is a reason so many sportbikes have steering dampers from the factory. They need them.

Yetimeister 's problem stems from the (opinion) poor design of the VV hardtail he used  which forces you to seek a larger rear wheel and extend the forks to obtain workable ground clearance .

I think we already have extended forks. I certainly wouldn't want them extended further.

I haven't noticed any significant differences in handling with my 3" over forks.  I have noticed a significant increase in my comfort level.  it raises the front of the bike just enough that my seat position is much improved for both my legs and my back.  I'm 6'1" with 35" inseam.  I was a little cautious with it at first, but there really wasn't a need.  I take corners comfortably at the same speeds I always have.  Not Crazy fast, but not slow for conditions either.
When I go faster than 60 I do notice a little more wind resistance.  I could always put the windshield back on, but ducking down a little closer to the bike works too.

Interesting bit of trivia... axle to fork crown measurement on a XA Harley 45 flathead springer is the same as a stock Savage front end. The military WL version is 2 inches shorter.
