Today is not a US holiday

Which is a little odd.
The events that occured in Appomattox 153 years ago were significant.
Lee bowed to the inevitable. Chattle slavery in the US was over. That is hugely important.
But we ignore it.
I assume, and I may be wrong, that we were being exceptionally delicate to the feelings of white southerners. And that's just silly.
The Confederates had spent years murdering Americans. They should have expected to be reminded of that error now and then.
I'd suggest the last 150 years might have been more pleasant for the majority of our people if reconstruction had been a bit more durable and in your face.
And celebrating the day the war ended might have been a good start.

Can’t even agree to the truth about the war, still.....
Your suggestion is mere supposition, like GW, and that “belief” system has never delivered any sustainable results BEAUSE its ALL based on directing the narrative, which, stabs our freedom of the press, free speech, right in the heart!

If your family had lived through reconstruction, I do NOT think they would say it was kid gloves.

Interesting point and idea!

I never would have thought of that.

Thanks for the insight.

Maybe if we didn’t use if, as justification for historical determination of a event that was...
