Compression Test

The LS650 has a solenoid operated compression release for starting.  How do you check cranking pressure?  Will it hurt the starter or starter drive if I disconnect the compression release temporarily to check cranking pressure?  Will it even crank over with the compression release inoperative?

Disconnect the cable, or remove the arm from the shaft....or unplug the solenoid.

Sounds good.  So I can assume that it won't hurt the starter or starter drive.  Many years ago I worked in a Harley shop (early 70's).  We had lots of trouble with the little sprint 350.  It used a Hitachi starter with a planetary gear drive.  Used to regularly see those gear drives disintegrate.  I don't want to hurt the little starter on my LS650.  Thanks much.

The case can be broken on the early models......if the engine kicks backward at the shutdown.  Later on a torque limiter was installed that allowed slippage if a kick back occurred.

Every now and then when I shut my bike off.....I can hear it kick backward and there is a faint whine sound as the engine comes to a stop.

Please post the compression test when you have it. I did mine recently and it was only 125 which I cannot believe. Mind you it's difficult to get the adapter into the spark plug socket on this bike so I'm hoping it wasn't sealing properly.

That's the aermachhi single yeah? I had a '73 model with the red white and blue stripes on a black tank.

Yes, the Americhi single.  I have fond memories of bump starting the demo every morning to warm it up so the salesmen could get it started when a customer wanted a check out.  Whew!  I was not fond of the sprint 350.

If you put it in gear and roll it past tdc, then the starter can get a running start.

It was my first bike and it did lasting psychological damage to me that lingers till this very day. It reduced me to tears on many occasions.
