It's bloody cold out. Certainly more cold in the garage than in the machine shop.
Thought about making a swingarm pivot bolt and nut out of stainless. Turns out that 7068 aluminum is stronger than 300 series stainless. And of course, lighter. I'll leave off the dust caps to show it off  Cool
so....
(BTW, the parts are the same size, I just took the pic at an angle)

Armen,  It sounds like aluminum should be avoided for use in axles ,it MIGHT be OK for the pivot bolt, but is it worth the risk? How much weight are you saving , if you  change it? What would happen if it failed?

Batman,
Kinda how I read the piece. I was in the process of making a modified aluminum front axle for the Savage, and I might can the project after reading what Kevin wrote. Maybe I'll just use the aluminum one as a model for making a better steel axle. I'll post some pics when it's further along. Basically the problem is that I can't use a larger diameter axle because of the small bearing bore on the front wheels. And there isn't enough metal in the front hub to open up the hols for a larger ID bearing.
As for the s/a pivot, I think it'll be ok. The pivot is loaded mainly in shear, and doesn't have any unsupported area to flex like an axle does.
I weighed the pieces, and the pivot is a few ounces lighter. And it's better looking  Roll Eyes
So, I'll prob use the aluminum s/a pivot.

Armen, That's why I thought it might be OK  for the pivot, that area is much better supported , where as the rear axle is on the longer arms of the swingarm , and there could be some small differences in the shocks, both causing flex as in the front forks.

He is amazing. Always read his columns. Bought all his books. Had him autograph the books. One says "To Armen, who still wishes he was me" and the other says "To Armen, who like me, never got over it".
Only reason I still subscribe to Cycle World.
