Think I will try to start my bike....
03/06/18 at 08:55:28

She has set dormant since last summer, August.
I was lazy, just pulled her into the shed, tarped her, and left.
Battery hooked up, fuel in carb.....I know, I know, lazy!

I hope she fires, but I doubt it.
Should I drain the carb, and charge the battery before I even give it a go?

Work wants me to stay on, remember I was going to retire in July, but they promise to return me back to my old location, which was why I even got the bike.....easy surface streets, and go right to the front of the line on the ferry, cheaper fare, etc.

Its a 30 plus mile freeway ride, presently, one way, and I just won't chance that.
I question my "comfort" level at those sustained speeds, and I honestly doubt the bikes ability to really be safe, power-wise.

Wish me luck, any advice?

The folks that bought my rescue bike couldn't get it started.  I had them put a tube on the carb drain and open the drain screw, and drain out about a shot glass full of fuel.  After doing that - the bike started right up.

I believe the fuel in the float bowl was no longer burnable.......a shot of fuel from the fuel tank fixed it.

You might drain the carb bowl just to see what's in there ,charge the battery if it needs it (check with a volt meter) and you might spray some wd-40 ,or a little fogging oil in the spark plug hole (to build compression and protect rings and cylinder walls )just in case it doesn't fire up right away.

OK, finally stopped raining, went out and put the key into the ignition, gave it a twist to see if I got lights, nada....

So, it looks like I will charge her, and drain the carb, etc.

Is it a good idea, yes, or no, to use starting fluid?

I know my outboards like a little juice when I first start them up from winters slumber.....

I think I will just pull the tank too, and give it a squirt of two stroke motor oil (yamalube)  as well, good idea?

Thanks

I never use it - as the engine should start just using gasoline and air.

Starting fluid can wash the oil off the cylinder wall......that is never a good thing.

If and when I use Starting Fluid ... I always put it on the outside of the air breather/filter so no direct Fluid gets into the cylinder .   Like Dave said , that OIL FILM is a good thing to keep , so much so that I quit using conventional oil long ago.   Wink

I was under the impression : The worst thing you can do to a battery is to let it get in a "Run-Down" state and leave it there for an extended period of time ,   and the second worst thing you can do to one is to Charge it too fast .

I wish ya luck with it !

How cold does it get in your vicinity? If your battery is the old fashioned flooded type rather than an AGM, and it stayed discharged for very long in below freezing temps the electrolyte could have frozen. In that case it's likely no good.

If it's an AGM it's probably ok. AGMs take a long time to self discharge though, so if yours is completely flat, well...

Nothing lasts forever.

Ok, can still see good enough, bump and all.....
Got the battery pulled and sitting on the workbench.
Hooked it up to the charger.
It’s one that will tell you what it’s doing, type of battery, etc.
It’s charging, and it’s a AGM type.
We’ll see I guess.
Also drained the carb, that little bugger had never been turned, but I got it....
Can I get a atta boy, it’s not stripped or jimmied  Grin
The gas smells good, I mean I have smelled bad gas, and not at Taco Bell, butin gas cans, etc, smell more like paint thinner or sumtin.
This smelt good, Clear, etc...
Should I light a match and toss it in the tank to see ?   Embarrassed Shocked

Oh well, just waiting now, just a little dusty but otherwise....???

My S40 sat for awhile, during our usual fall monsoon (I'm in Gig Harbor) and on a rare sunny day, I rolled it out and nada. Pulled the battery - dry. Filled with distilled water, put on a battery tender for 24 hours, reinstalled, fired right up. But I have been using STA-BIL for years now. Always. BTW, it still fires right up, no problem. Also, TWIMC, we here in western Washington rarely see freezing temperatures, so a frozen battery is unlikely.

Yeah, gets cold, but not hard enough to freeze anything but shallow water.
I got a feeling she will bark at me once I give her a reason to 😋
