First fruit lands before the Congress in Barcelona even starts ......

Does any of this sound familiar?     Yep, it is the SAME Google's general vision statement for the new cross platform Fuchsia OS system that they are just now putting together.   The wording of the two vision statements are the same.

So, Samsung is building some brand new hardware right now that is "philosophically compatible" with a new Google OS system that has not quite arrived yet.

Will MS attempt to try to co-opt this effort by writing up a Win 10 ARM OS to drop in on to the DeX docked S9 phone since the S9 phone and the DeX dock are really real, right now?   It's funny, as you can get the brand new, currently real, much faster SD 845 S9 phone and DeX docking system (where you get a PC and a phone) for $850 or about $150 less than a two years back Snap Dragon 835 stuck inside a new Windows 10 on ARM laptop.  And the Win 10 ARM laptop is a mix that has not got very much in the way of current modern software available and it has no phone included in the deal).

So, mebbe not.   Likely not since after 2 years MS has barely gotten their much ballyhoo'd Win 10 for ARM to work on the 2 years in development Snapdragon 835 laptops  ---  got it to just barely sorta kinda working and MS is currently showing no efforts made at all against the brand new SD 845 processor at all right now.

https://liliputing.com/2018/02/mediatek-launches-helio-p60-ai-features-mid-ra...

Let's see, real progress is metered at the bottom end of the spectrum as that is what goes into this year's very basic simple normal man's replacement phones.

You know, the Blu phones, the cheap crap phones.   When they get better, then some real progress has actually taken place.

MediaTek’s latest P60 processor is an octa-core chip that the company says is up to 25 more efficient and offers up to 70 percent higher performance than its predecessor, while offering new artificial intelligence features for machine learning and computer vision-related tasks.

The processor is a 12nm chip that combines four ARM Cortex-A73 CPU cores and four lower-power Cortex-A53 cores and ARM Mali-G72 MPr graphics.

It supports up to 8GB of LPDDR4 1800 MHz memory, eMMC 5.1 or UFS 2.1 storage, and cameras with resolutions up to 32MP (or dual camera systems with 16MP + 20MP cameras) and screen resolutions up to 2400 x 1080 pixels.

It features MediaTek’s NeuroPilot AI technology that’s compatible with AI platforms including TensorFlow TF Lite, Caffe, and Caffe2. Rather than using a dedicated co-processor like some rival systems-on-a-chip, the Helio P60 combines CPU, GPU, and Mobile APU resources for hardware-accelerated AI processing.

While I suspect that means performance won’t be on par with, say, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 or Huawei Kirin 970, MediaTek says the P60 can offer “AI-infused experiences in apps with real-time beautification, novel real-time overlays, AR/MR acceleration, enhancements to photography, real-time video previews and more.”

          http://i.mediatek.com/P60
 https://www.mediatek.com/features/artificial-intelligence

Once again, the low end boys like to stay several generations back, buying low cost licenses for older ARM tech that they can afford once they become cheap enough to afford.

The low end boys also love these new AI functions, as they can add "70% performance improvements" to the existing tech they currently license at a cost of peanuts compared to the cost of buying brand new full bore state of the art ARM stuff.   correction:  they did add a Mali-G72 MPR "state of the art" totally modern graphics set which unlocked of all the rest of the built-in DynamIQ AI stuff

And now Mediatek is actually doing it with the existing stuff in the chipsets instead of adding a new co-processor, integrating AI with the rest of the mess seamlessly instead of pasting it on.

All of this type of "integral progress" will come on very quickly and cheaply and it will be in the heart of every cheap cell phone by Christmas of this year.   Google will now start putting AI calls into Android 9.0 and then this AI stuff really hits the afterburners.

        Undecided

By the way, Intel's 14nm lithography level just got lapped again by yet another hockey stick guy making really cheap stuff .....

This chip should be sturdy enough to run Win 10 ARM, as it kicks the two year old SD 835's butt spec wise.   MS won't do that though, as they seem to want to charge a thousand dollars for everything.

So, good ol' Samsung is working up a full "uses Android system calls" Galaxy Linux distro to run on their DeX docks when mounting their recent phones and that sort of action sort of short circuits all of MS's grandiose never quite get completely cooked plans all over again, pretty much.

https://liliputing.com/2018/02/qualcomm-introducing-snapdragon-700-platform-u...

Qualcomm introducing Snapdragon 700 platform for upper mid-range phones

The company says Snapdragon 700 series chips will offer up to 30 percent better power efficiency than a Snapdragon 660 chip, enabling improvements to both performance and battery life.

At this point Qualcomm is just talking about 700 Series chips in general rather than providing details about a specific system-on-a-chip. But here are some other highlights:

Multi-core AI engine for 2x faster on-device AI applications than Snapdragon 660 (thanks to the Kryo CPU, Hexagon Vector Processor, and Adreno Visual Processing subsystem working together)

Qualcomm Spectra ISP (image signal processor) for enhanced low-light photography, slow-motion video, and other camera features

Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ for a 50 percent charge in 15 minutes (assuming a 2750 mAh battery)

Bluetooth 5 support

Qualcomm says the first Snapdragon 700 Series samples will ship to customers in the first half of 2018, which means we could start to see phones powered by the new chips later this year.

MediaTek and Qualcomm announce their brand new "upper middle range" chipsets at the same time, intending for them to both land at the end of Q1 2018.   Mediatek is much more real at the moment and is currently shipping their trial units while Qualcomm is just "promising" theirs soon.

People are reacting against the very high cost of an Apple iPhone and the Android crew is doing a better job of offering a range of more affordable mid priced phones that meet your wallet needs.

DyamIQ is still phasing in their AI functions with the new G72 series of Mali Graphics engines that do support all the AI improvements in cameras and image identification.

(for example, take a shot of where you are when lost and Google Maps will find you from the streetview image you just took.  Take a shot of a sign in a foreign language and Google will automatically translate it for you.)

As AI gets more widely distributed in actual in-service phones more and more neat AI tricks are programmed then the number of benefits of AI will become more and more compelling.   Right now all these first fruits at "70% improvements" in speed are simply implementing AI on last year's old existing midrange phones.

Still, improvements are improvements.   We look to see even more improvements in the phones announced in the second half of 2018.

===================================================

Note: Allwinner is the only hockey stick boy that has not implemented AI at this stage.   If Allwinner acts soon to embrace both the new smaller 12nm lithography nodes and turning on a full set of DynamIQ AI capabilities then that will leave Intel sitting all by their lonesome in the 14nm stone ages.

Allwinner has faltered a bit of late, spending all their attention on the automotive arena and pretty much stopping their efforts to keep up in the consumer electronics tablets zone where they had owned about a third of the market.   True, Android Tablets as a whole market has faltered a bunch as well lately, losing importance.   So, Allwinner has moved on more into Automotive and is currently struggling to make a home for itself in that tough new market.

https://liliputing.com/2018/02/wd-demos-sd-card-880mb-s-speed-pcie-x1-interfa...

WD demos SD card with 880MB/s speed, PCIe x1 interface

Western Digital is showing off an SD card at Mobile World Congress that’s faster than many SSDs. It can handle sequential read speeds up to 880 MB/s and sequential write speeds up to 430 MB/s.

The only catch is that your PC, phone, or tablet probably can’t use it… and that’s unlikely to change anytime soon.   This is the old full sized SD Card dimensionally with a new much faster interface.   The micro SD version of this technology is expected as soon as the industry standards are all worked out.

Still, Western Digital’s technology demonstration could point the way toward a future where some computing devices could use removable SD cards for storage instead of embedded UFS, eMMC, or SSD storage.

But here’s the problem: most PCs and phones don’t even support UHS-II or UHS-III today. You only really see those kinds of speeds in high-end cameras and other premium niche devices right now.

Since most users don’t expect or need super-fast (and expensive) SD cards, most PC and phone makers don’t support the faster technology. So there’s not much point in buying a super-speedy (and expensive) card if your computer can’t read it.

But while your next laptop might not support the tech WD is showing off this week, it’s possible we could eventually see the product show up in specialized products that typically have solid state storage soldered to the motherboard, but which could benefit from a removable solid state solution like SD cards.

Or, more likely as a real standard is developed for this non-volatile this fast memory Western Digital will adhere to that new standard.

Point being, it is here now and it is real.   And a workable worldwide standard that is agreeable to all parties is being sought actively as this memory is quite a bit faster than SSD at this stage of the game, and amazingly much smaller too.

And yes, it can be sized to fit a micro SD card slot in a phone physically but the interface has to be totally different, thus the need for an agreeable set of standards to suit phones, cameras, video recorders, tablets and PCs.

Rather than fire off a set of competing brand standards (the old fashioned approach) and letting the winner eventually take all, now they are going to do it FOSS style from the very beginning -- meet together to make up a cooperative standards set made up by memory makers, device builders, resellers and customers.

https://liliputing.com/2018/02/closer-look-samsungs-linux-galaxy-use-phon-lik...

Closer look at Samsung’s Linux on Galaxy    (use a phone like an Ubuntu desktop PC)

There are a number of ways to run a desktop Linux environment on a smartphone, but usually it involves installing third-party software. Samsung is one of the first major phone makers that plans to offer official software that lets you use the company’s Android phones as Linux desktop PCs.

It’s called Linux on Galaxy, and Samsung gave us an early look late last year. Now the company is starting to show the software off to developers… and a recent video provides a pretty impressive demonstration of what you may be able to do with this platform.
Samsung seems to be targeting developers initially, and one of the highlights of its demo was loading the Eclipse IDE in Ubuntu 16.04. In other words, you could use your phone to write code.

But the demo also shows Firefox, GIMP, a terminal, and other applications.

Linux on Galaxy is designed for use with Samsung’s DeX platform, which lets you connect recent Galaxy S series phones to an external display to get a desktop-style environment with support for multi-window multitasking, among other things. But since the software uses the phone’s Android resources, you don’t need to reboot. Just connect your phone, fire up the Linux on Galaxy environment, and start computing.

Even with a relatively powerful smartphone chip like a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 or Snapdragon 845, it’s unlikely that you’ll want to do resource-intensive calculation or rendering tasks on a phone when you could do the same things much more quickly on a computer with a more powerful Intel or AMD processor. But for light-weight day to day activities, a phone that you can carry from home to workstation to workstation to home could be all you really need.

https://liliputing.com/2018/03/idc-desktop-pc-shipments-fell-less-100-million...

Notebook computers have been outselling desktop PCs for years, but it’s probably a bit early to put desktops on deathwatch. They’re still popular among business users, gamers, and others… and according to new numbers from IDC, it looks like notebooks only outsold desktops by 1.6x in 2017.

But desktop PC shipments did fall below 100 million in 2017, and IDC expects the decline in desktop shipments to continue in the coming years.

Also, IDC estimates that total PC shipments (including notebooks, desktops, detachables, and slate PCs) will fall from 423.2 million in 2017 to 385.7 million by 2022.    That is right at a 10% decline level in four years, a conservative estimate to be sure.

Does this mean people are replacing PCs with smartphones and other forms of computing devices? Not necessarily… but it could be a sign that some folks aren’t replacing their existing PCs as often as they used to, and one reason for that could be an increased reliance on phones for many of the things we used to use a PC for.

Then again, smartphone sales slumped for the first time in Q4, 2017… so maybe people just aren’t upgrading any of their devices as often as they had been previously.

Here is a novel thought -- as MS and Intel keep jacking up the prices of everything so that NOTHING primo costs less than $1000 they are actually affecting demand by simple price pressure.   Plus the Wintel boys are a mess right now, and they keep making new messes every time you turn around.

They are also setting the stage for a perfect storm for the first good replacement tech to sweep in from the wilderness and jest clean all that pent up demand up .....    AMD is the current closest thing to a replacement tech and it is selling better than it has in years past.
