https://liliputing.com/2018/02/mediatek-launches-helio-p60-ai-features-mid-ra...Let's see, real progress is metered at the bottom end of the spectrum as that is what goes into this year's very basic simple normal man's replacement phones.
You know, the Blu phones, the cheap crap phones. When they get better, then some real progress has actually taken place.
MediaTek’s latest P60 processor is an octa-core chip that the company says is up to 25 more efficient and offers up to 70 percent higher performance than its predecessor, while offering new artificial intelligence features for machine learning and computer vision-related tasks.
The processor is a 12nm chip that combines four ARM Cortex-A73 CPU cores and four lower-power Cortex-A53 cores and ARM Mali-G72 MPr graphics.
It supports up to 8GB of LPDDR4 1800 MHz memory, eMMC 5.1 or UFS 2.1 storage, and cameras with resolutions up to 32MP (or dual camera systems with 16MP + 20MP cameras) and screen resolutions up to 2400 x 1080 pixels.
It features MediaTek’s NeuroPilot AI technology that’s compatible with AI platforms including TensorFlow TF Lite, Caffe, and Caffe2. Rather than using a dedicated co-processor like some rival systems-on-a-chip, the Helio P60 combines CPU, GPU, and Mobile APU resources for hardware-accelerated AI processing.
While I suspect that means performance won’t be on par with, say, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 or Huawei Kirin 970, MediaTek says the P60 can offer “AI-infused experiences in apps with real-time beautification, novel real-time overlays, AR/MR acceleration, enhancements to photography, real-time video previews and more.” http://i.mediatek.com/P60 https://www.mediatek.com/features/artificial-intelligenceOnce again, the low end boys like to stay several generations back, buying low cost licenses for older ARM tech that they can afford once they become cheap enough to afford.
The low end boys also love these new AI functions, as they can add "70% performance improvements" to the existing tech they currently license at a cost of peanuts compared to the cost of buying brand new full bore state of the art ARM stuff.
correction: they did add a Mali-G72 MPR "state of the art" totally modern graphics set which unlocked of all the rest of the built-in DynamIQ AI stuffAnd now Mediatek is actually doing it with the existing stuff in the chipsets instead of adding a new co-processor, integrating AI with the rest of the mess seamlessly instead of pasting it on.All of this type of "integral progress" will come on very quickly and cheaply and it will be in the heart of every cheap cell phone by Christmas of this year. Google will now start putting AI calls into Android 9.0 and then this AI stuff really hits the afterburners. By the way, Intel's 14nm lithography level just got lapped again by yet another hockey stick guy making really cheap stuff .....
This chip should be sturdy enough to run Win 10 ARM, as it kicks the two year old SD 835's butt spec wise. MS won't do that though, as they seem to want to charge a thousand dollars for everything.
So, good ol' Samsung is working up a full "uses Android system calls" Galaxy Linux distro to run on their DeX docks when mounting their recent phones and that sort of action sort of short circuits all of MS's grandiose never quite get completely cooked plans all over again, pretty much.
